South Carolina had not seen a major infusion of funding for roads since 1987, and the potholes and crumbling asphalt proved it. Many in South Carolina said this state of affairs would not change, but in 2017, President Pro Tem of the Senate, Hugh Leatherman, tasked Sheheen with leading a committee to push through a road funding bill. Sheheen spent countless hours building support for a multipronged effort that reformed the governance and operations of road administration, increased the gas tax, and made the overall tax code fairer in South Carolina. The bill was backed by Republicans and Democrats. Working closely with House Speaker Jay Lucas, Sheheen pushed through the bill with enough votes to override a veto from the governor. South Carolina’s roads will see an infusion of more than half a billion dollars per year in an effort to responsibly make them better.

The countries with the most native English speakers are, in descending order, the United States , the United Kingdom , Canada ,Australia , South Africa ,Ireland , and New Zealand . In these countries, children of native speakers learn English from their parents, and local people who speak other languages and new immigrants learn English to communicate in their neighbourhoods and workplaces. The inner-circle countries provide the base from which English spreads to other countries in the world.

When I wrote about U.S. Senator Kamala Harris and her discrimination against a Sikh man who wanted to work within the correctional facilities of the state, a lot of commentary I received revolved around singling her out for criticism when in fact there are people of color that have done much worse. First of all, yes there are. Which is why Im also writing about Nikki Haley . Second of all, it is important to provide healthy debate even around candidates that are seeking a public office and it definitely has to be equitable and from both parties. I agree. But talking about Senator Harris has raised some special hackles and the undercurrent is that we all know of her prosecutor background and how many people under her jurisdiction have been impacted by the policies and laws she chose to uphold. History is written and we cant turn back the clock. But at least digging into someones past and trying to highlight that while Senator Harris trajectory through Democratic politics is historic, we cant continue to negate the harm she has inflicted. Nor am I making the argument that we shouldnt elect women at all. Of course we should. Were not represented adequately enough on the Progressive Socialist side.
My goal is understanding how representational politics and identity have a significant role in showing us how destructive things can get if we just fell on if people look like us and speak our language and have common backgrounds.

Nomination and confirmation
On November 23, 2016, then President-electDonald Trump announced his intention to nominate Haley for ambassador to the United Nations. On January 20, 2017, President Trump sent Haley’s nomination to the United States Senate. It has been reported that Trump considered Haley for the position of secretary of state, which she declined.
On January 24, 2017, by a vote of 964, Haley was confirmed by the Senate to become U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. The four senators who voted against Haley were Bernie Sanders , , Tom Udall , and Chris Coons Haley was the first Indian American to hold a cabinet level position.
