Lee Silverman Voice Treatment
The Lee Silverman Voice Treatment is a series of exercises for people with PD. Named for Mrs. Lee Silverman who developed the technique in 1987, LSVT has been scientifically studied for 20 years. Also called LSVT LOUD, the technique focuses on simple tasks that are designed to maximize vocal and respiratory functioning. LSVT LOUD exercises have been shown to have several benefits, including:
- Improving voice quality and loudness,
- Improving the articulation of speech,
- Increasing the inflection ,
- Improving the intelligibility of speech .2-4
Research studies have found that people with PD who are treated using LSVT are likely to maintain improvement in their vocal function for up to two years following therapy.3 LSVT LOUD exercises are administered in 16 sessions over a month and include techniques such as:
- Warm-up: While sitting up straight, the patient says ah in a loud, clear voice for as long as possible, stopping if the voice becomes scratchy.
- Vocal stretches: After taking a deep breath, the patient starts at a low pitch and glides up as high as possible saying an Ah or Ee sound.5
Patients are trained to monitor the loudness of their voice and the effort it takes to produce it. The treatment does not train people with PD to shout or yell, but it uses loudness training to bring the voice to a healthy, improved vocal level without strain. Look for a speech therapist who is certified in the LSVT technique or search for a clinician at the LSVT Global website.4

Parkinsons Speech Therapy Exercises
The following speech therapy exercises are specifically designed to help people who suffer from Parkinsons disease.
This exercise might seem simple, but deep breathing is essential for keeping your lungs and diaphragm healthy and strong. This, in turn, helps you maintain your ability to project your voice.
Deep breathing is a great warm-up to get your ready for other, more advanced exercises.
To do this exercise, simply start by sitting or standing up straight. Take a deep breath in through your nose. Breathe in until you feel your ribs and abdomen start to expand.
When youve inhaled as much as you can, exhale slowly through your mouth .
Take several deep, full breaths before moving on to the next exercise.
This is a great exercise that will help you maintain your pronunciation and projection abilities.
Start by taking a deep breath in. Then, push out from your diaphragm while making an ah sound. Try to extend this sound for at least 15 seconds.
Take another deep breath and push out from your diaphragm while repeating an oh sound for 15 seconds. Do this again with both oo and ee sounds.
When youve done the exercise with each sound, youre ready to move on and practice changing your pitch. Do this by alternating between the oh and ee sounds for 30 seconds.
Sirening is another good exercise for improving your pronunciation and pitch control.

Doing The Best Speech Therapy Exercises
Overall, the best speech therapy exercises are the ones youpractice repetitively and consistently. Thats how the brain recovers.
However, because many different skills go into speech, itsimportant to cover all your bases by working with an SLP or using speechtherapy apps.
And if you have trouble getting started because you canttalk at all, then singing therapy is a great option to look into.
Benefits Of Speech Therapy Exercises
Speech therapy exercises are great for improving languagedisorders like aphasia. These disorders occur when the language center of the brain becomes damagedafter injury like stroke.
The language center resides in the left hemisphere of thebrain. Therefore, aphasia often occurs after a left hemisphere stroke or braininjury.
Speech therapy exercises help improve language skills bysparking neuroplasticity:the brains ability to rewire itself. Through neuroplasticity, healthy areas ofthe brain can take over the function of language.
Speech therapy exercises encourage new areas of the brain to take on the function of speech and communication.
Neuroplasticity is activated with repetitive stimulation, soconsistent speech therapy is required for the best results.
