The way they have to communicate through ASL is totally a new perspective. For example someone may raise his voice to emphasize on something while in ASL this is done by bringing different expressions on the face like raising the eyebrow, gesturing fast etc.

Just like different regions have their dialects which slightly makes the spoken words different from each other in the same way for sign language the sign, pronunciation, slangs and the rhythm in which the signs are gestured all starts carrying with regions.

Maybe every word in English dies not have a corresponding sign in ASL. This is where the finger spellings come to play. For each letter in English language there is a corresponding finger spelling. So if they have to tell the name of someone to which there is no sign language they can call it through use of finger spellings.

Practicing Common Phrases In Sign Language

  • 1Understand how phrases are composed. In sign language, the ordering of words is different than in written or spoken English. To form phrases in sign language, you will need to get used to the different ordering of words in sign language and remember to use this order when you are signing.XResearch source
  • For example, the question What is your name? would be ordered Your name what? in sign language. Are you deaf? would be signed as Deaf you? and Who is she? would be signed She who? or Who she?
  • This different ordering is often done to reduce the number of signs that must be performed in a conversation and to make it easier to move the conversation along using a minimal amount of signs.
  • 2Practice greeting someone. You can start to learn how to put short sentences together in sign language so you can have a casual conversation with a deaf or hard of hearing person. Begin with a simple conversation, such as greeting someone and asking them their name.XResearch source
  • For example, you may say, Hello by placing your hand to your forehead with your palm facing downward and then raising it away from your forehead.
  • Then, you may ask, Your name what? by pointing at the person with your forefinger and middle finger stacked on top of each other, followed by the sign for name, which is crossing your forefinger and middle finger over your other forefinger and middle finger to form a flat X shape, tapping them twice over each other.

The general hand shape and movements are the same, but the fingers reach towards the forehead rather than the lips. It even involves the same outward and down motion as thank you in ASL. Its a wonderful tip-of-the-hat kind of gesture.

That said, many sign languages do indeed share the same sign for thank you as ASL, wellthats not strictly true. I should say that ASL shares the same sign for thank you as other sign languages, as the blowing-a-kiss style gesture was borrowed by ASL from the French form, Langue Des Signes Francais .

A Career Choice That May Be Natural Or Unexpected

Both of his parents were deaf, so Frédérick was exposed to the Deaf community at a very young age. As soon as he graduated from high school, he was asked to interpret courses at the Cégep du Vieux Montréal. Thats how he naturally turned to a career as a sign language interpreter 27 years ago and, for over 10 years now, he has shared his passion with the next generation of interpreters at the Université du Québec à Montréal.

He stresses the importance of understanding the Deaf community and its culture and being part of it to interpret content well. You cant just learn through classes. You have to be around the community to some degree.

While LSQ was part of Fredericks life from an early age, the opposite is true for Clare Gallant when it comes to ASL. In all honesty, it was never something I aspired to or even knew about. I wanted to take some exciting classes before I started my next degree. Sign language looked interesting, so I took a basic class. That snowballed and I discovered that I had an aptitude for it.

Both interpreters agree that practice makes perfectnothing beats practice to master the subtle art of sign language interpretation. The real learning occurs once you actually start working, says Clare. Like Frédérick, she stresses that it is also with the help of the Deaf community that interpreters grow and become more skilled.
