Learn How To Fingerspell Like A Pro

Once youve learnt how to fingerspell each letter of the alphabet, its time to polish your form! Check out these tips to improve your fingerspelling:

  • Pause between spelling individual words. This improves the comprehensibility of your signing.
  • Keep your hand in one place while spelling each word. This can take practice, but it makes it much clearer for others to read back. An exception to this is when you are fingerspelling an acronym. In this instance, move each letter in a small circle to let people know not to read the letters together as a single word.
  • If you are fingerspelling a word that has a double letter, bounce your hand between those two letters to indicate the repetition of that letter. You can also do this by sliding the letter slightly to the side to indication it should be doubled. It can be difficult to not bounce between every letter when first learning to fingerspell. You can use your free hand to hold your write to help steady it while practicing. Eventually, youll get used to keeping your hand steady by itself while fingerspelling.
  • Keep your fingerspelling hand at the height of your shoulder. This is the most comfortable position for your signing and the other persons reading.
  • Keep your pace consistent. There is no need to race through when spelling a word. Its more important that each letter is clear, and the overall rhythm is consistent.

An Intro To Asl Grammar Rules

ASL grammar rules may seem intimidating at first, but once you understand the basics, youll be using sign language more fluidly in no time!

First and foremost, a common misconception about ASL is that it is just a signed version of English, word-for-word. This leads to the flawed assumption that ASL and English share similar grammar rules.

However, ASL is a visual language, independent of English, with its own grammar and syntax. If we examine English, we might notice that its structure is very linear and restricted. Each word has its own place in a sentence and the sentence would no longer make sense if you change the order of a verb or adjective.

On the other hand, sign language grammar is much more flexible, allowing for multiple word orders to represent the same concept. For more information, check out the video below:

Thank You ASL American Sign Language Postcards

Based on the tremendous reaction to this recent piece about sign language interpretation, we thought you might like to know more about it. Here are seven things about sign language that might surprise you.

    1. Different countries have different sign languages.

This is the sign for the word math in two different sign languagesAmerican Sign Language on the left, and Japanese Sign Language on the right. Why should there be more than one sign language? Doesnt that just complicate things? This question would make sense if sign language was a system invented and then handed over to the deaf community as an assistive device. But sign languages, like spoken languages, developed naturally out of groups of people interacting with each other. We know this because we have observed it happen in real time.

    2. Given a few generations, improvised gestures can evolve into a full language.

In 1980, the first Nicaraguan school for the deaf opened.

Students who had been previously isolated from other deaf people brought the gestures they used at home, and created a sort of pidgin sign with each other. It worked for communication, but it wasnt consistent or rule-governed. The next generation who came into the school learned the pidgin sign and spontaneously started to regularize it, creating rules for verb agreement and other consistent grammatical devices. Over time, it stabilized into a full-fledged linguistic system, ISN, or Idioma de Señas de Nicaragua.

    Psa About Signing Thank You

Thank you is signed one-handed from the front of the chin. Be careful not to begin that sign under the chin before arcing outward or you change it to f*** you, which is considered offensive to most people.

Further, starting at your cheek, next to your chin, and moving outward is the sign for prostitute, or similar terms.

Finally, starting from your lips, rather than your chin before the outward arc, is blowing a kiss. A misplaced sign starting point can be the difference between a sign of gratitude and one of insult. That makes it essential to use the correct palm orientation, handshape, location, non-manual signals/ expressions, and other language features youll learn about later, when signing ASL.

Thank you, or the simpler form- thanks, is a polite expression of ones gratitude and is used often in everyday interactions. While manners and etiquette differ between cultures, a sincere thank you is an easy way to show gratitude among most people. Since showing respect and good manners is necessary when learning new languages, including American Sign Language , learning to sign thank you is important. So lets jump right in and discuss how to sign thank you, youre welcome, and some other helpful expressions in ASL.

Is The Sign For Thank You The Same In All Sign Languages

What youve just learned here today is the sign for thank you in American Sign Language . Just as saying thank you differs from oral language to oral language, so does it differ from sign language to sign language. However, again, much like oral languages, there are often cross-form/nation commonalities between words and phrases.

Take the sign for thank you in Libras, the sign language of urban Brazil, for example. The general hand shape and movements are the same, but the fingers reach towards the forehead rather than the lips. It even involves the same outward and down motion as thank you in ASL. Its a wonderful tip-of-the-hat kind of gesture.

That said, many sign languages do indeed share the same sign for thank you as ASL, wellthats not strictly true. I should say that ASL shares the same sign for thank you as other sign languages, as the blowing-a-kiss style gesture was borrowed by ASL from the French form, Langue Des Signes Francais .

In fact, Laurent Clerk, creator of LSF, was so dedicated to proliferating his visual language that over 60% of ASL signs can be traced back to one of his own original linguistic creations.

    Response To ‘thank You’

When one says ‘thank you’ to you, now how do you reply back in Deaf ASL culture?

In American hearing culture, people typically say WELCOME or “you’re welcome” or other forms such as “my pleasure”, “no problem”.

In American Deaf culture, signers usually reply in various ways as well, usually less formal . “Welcome” may be used but thank back is more common. Other possibilities are like “phsaw, no problem”, or simply “phsaw”, a quick nod with a smile, a quick thumb-up of acknowledgement, and such. They are naturally used in appropriate contexts, not something you can pick any one of them.

If you’re uncertain as a hearing learner or a newcomer to Deaf community, probably the safest reply is “welcome”.
