Adobe Premiere Pro Now Has Ai Speech Recognition For Automatic Subtitle Creation

Adobe has released a new with two big headline features. The first is that Premiere Pro can now natively transcribe the speech in your videos to text in order to text documents for closed-caption subtitles. Previously, youd need to purchase separate AI transcription tools like Simon Says, but now it can all be done natively within Premiere Pro itself.

The other big news from the Adobe camp is that Premiere Pros native Apple M1 version has now been officially released in its final form. Apple M1 support was launched as a beta in December 2020, but after seven months of testing, its now ready for prime time, with Adobe claiming speeds almost 80% faster than comparable Intel-based Macs.

The new feature for everybody, though, is the new Speech to Text engine that allows you to transcribe the audio in your videos, which Adobe says can result in higher discoverability in search engines as well as longer viewership. While you can create these manually, Adobe says that the Speech to Text feature can save hours on your workflow, bringing the transcription time for a five-minute video down from an average of around 70 minutes to a little over 15.

They say it uses Adobe Sensei machine learning to match the pacing of human speech, and captions can be customised and embedded into the video itself or exported for upload to platforms like YouTube which will be a big time and/or money saver for YouTube content creators.

Speech To Text Language Support

Language packs are files you can download, allowing you to use Speech to Text without an internet connection. Premiere Pro 22.2 includes the English language pack. You can download other language packs individually, as needed. Languages packs are typically 650GB and offer the same accuracy as the original release of Speech to Text.

Remix In Premiere Pro

The new Remix tool in Premiere Pro allows editors and creators to rearrange songs to match the timing of their videos. Powered by Adobe Sensei, Remix uses artificial intelligence to analyse the song and generate a new mix that fits the desired duration, whether shorter or longer than the original.

Remix works fast, making it possible to try out different arrangements using sliders in the Essential Sound panel. Until now, an editor could only fade music in and out, or had to make precision cuts with the razor tool to manually assemble a new arrangement, a process that can take hours. Remix can do this work in a few seconds.

The Play Head And The Position In The Transcript Are Linked

Its worth noting that the position in the transcript and the position of the play head along the sequence are linked. So, if you click on a word in the transcription panel, the word will become highlighted in blue, and at the same time, the play head will jump to the position of the word in sequence.

The opposite is also true. If you drag the play head along the sequence, the corresponding words in the transcription will consecutively be highlighted in blue, mirroring the speech.

If you are still working with Legacy Titles you can now convert them into Source Graphics within your Premiere Pro projects. Source Graphics are displayed in the Project panel, where you can track and sort them like any other project item. Upgrading Legacy Titles converts Legacy Title attributes, including text stylings, layer settings, and track item filters.

New Transcript/caption Workflow In Premiere Pro

Adobe released a new transcript/caption workflow with the July, 2021, release of Premiere Pro, then significantly updated it in October, 2021, with the v22 release. While captions were a part of Premiere for a while now, the automatic speech-to-text transcription is new. Heres an overview of how this works.

BEFORE YOU START

While you can create transcripts at any time, there are two places where transcripts will be the most helpful:

At the start of a project, to help you figure out what you are actually working with
At the end of a project, to create finished captions for release

Lets take a look at both. While the initial release had problems with text exporting, Adobe fixed them in the v22 release of Premiere Pro.

TRANSCRIBE BEFORE YOU START

Both transcripts and captions are created from clips in the Timeline.

Edit the clip, or clips, you want to transcribe into the Timeline. Make sure the audio volume in the clip is loud enough to hear. And, if there are tracks that just contain sound effects or music, mute them.

NOTE: As part of the transcription process, if you assign tags to your clips like Dialogue, Effects, Music you can specify that Premiere just create transcripts of Dialogue clips. This means you dont need to mute other tracks.

NOTE: To mute a track, click the M icon in the track header for that track.

Select the timeline, so there is a blue box around it, then switch to the Text panel and click the Transcript button in the top left.

Flexible Faster Speech To Text

The Speech to Text workflow in Premiere Pro for captioning videos is now faster and more flexible. allow the user to transcribe videos without an internet connection, and achieve the same level of accuracy as in the original release of Speech to Text. Adobe says that, on Intel Core i9 and Apple M1 computers, transcriptions are three times faster, and typically two times faster on other current processors.

Speech to Text automates transcription and captioning, while leaving full creative control of the results, including all of the design features of the Essential Graphics panel.

The English language pack is installed automatically with Premiere Pro and all other 12 supported languages can be installed within the application or via Creative Cloud Desktop. All language packs will be updated on an ongoing basis with future releases.

How to Create CAPTIONS and SPEECH to TEXT (Premiere Pro Tutorial)

Adobe has announced the July release for Premiere Pro, bringing with it a new Speech to Text captioning tool, native Apple silicon support and more.

Before diving into the new Speech to Text feature, its worth noting Premiere Pro 15.4 now runs natively on Apple silicon, meaning Apples M1-powered computers can make the most of their respective processing power. Adobe claims Premiere Pro on M1 Mac computers are nearly 80 percent faster than comparable Intel-based Macs, which falls roughly in line with the comparison test we recently conducted. Adobe also confirmed After Effects with native Apple Silicon support will be released later this year.

The July update also adds a new Speech to Text feature that automatically converts audio in a video into editable text for overlaying or embedding captions. As Adobe highlights in the below video showcasing the new Speech to Text feature, captions increase both accessibility and engagement of video content.

Currently, the Adobe Sensei-powered Speech to Text feature supports 13 languages. Its designed to match the pacing of human speech and also adds the ability to search for specific moments within a video sequence, as you can double-click on a transcribed word and the playhead will move to that position in the timeline.

How To Transcribe The Audio In Adobe Premiere Pro

To transcribe the audio in the video sequence of Premiere Pro do the following steps.

STEP 1

Click Window in the main menu bar, then Workspaces in the drop-down menu, and finally Captions and Graphics in the sub-menu that opens to the side.

Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut of Alt+Shift+4, which will also change your workspace to Captions and Graphics.

STEP 2

A floating panel will open with three options: Transcribe sequence, Create new caption track, and Import captions from file.

Note: If you wish to remain in your current workspace, click Windows and then Text to open the Transcript/Captions panel.

STEP 3

Once you have clicked the Transcribe sequence option, the Create Transcript panel will open. It will show the sequence name and length. Beneath those details, there is a drop-down menu for the language. If your language is not correctly set, click the down arrow, and choose the correct language from the selection.

STEP 4

The next drop-down menu allows you to choose the audio you wish to be transcribed. This can be Mix , or you can choose the audio on individual tracks, i.e., Audio 1, Audio 2, Audio 3, etc. You can also choose any clips in the sequence that have been tagged as Dialogue.

If only one person is speaking I choose the track with the speakers dialogue.

STEP 5

Upon completion, the transcribed audio will appear in the Transcript window, along with timestamps above each segment and an indication of who was speaking.

Replace Fonts In Project

Sometimes when you import an SRT file, the font will change from the one used initially. There are multiple explanations why this might happen, including if the Font isnt installed on your device. A quick and simple fix is to go to Graphics > Replace Fonts in Project choose the fonts you are changing From and To, and Premiere will update the whole project.

A Transcript Makes Larger Projects Manageable

Whatever your project, having a transcript can be incredibly useful, especially on a longer project. A transcript can help you get to grips with your source material. If you open the transcript in a word processor you can quickly find relevant sections by searching for related words or phrases.

Editing a large project on paper is a much more manageable process instead of constantly looking for the clips in your video sequence. Your paper edit can speed up your postproduction process once you get into the editing suite because its a kind of plan or route map for the editor to follow.

Find And Replace Text In Your Transcription

Type in the search term in the Search text field. Premiere Pro highlights all instances of the search term in the transcription.

Use the up and down arrows to navigate through all instances of the search term.

To replace only a selected instance of the search term, click Replace. To replace all instances of the search term, click Replace All.

How To Create Caption In Premiere Pro

Currently we can simply add captions by going into the project panel, hitting the new item icon and selecting captions. This creates a captions layer in the timeline. You can drag it to make it longer or shorter. If you then open up the captions menu from the windows menu you can see the text field and the timecodes of the caption.

The hateful thing about this is that you have to manually listen to your sentence, tap the plus icon, write your text, make sure that its the proper length and repeat that over and over again.

Exporting Transcript And Caption Files

Premiere Pro Speech To Text Auto Transcription Is Blowing My Mind

Premiere can export both the transcript and caption files for use with a third party editor or reader.

To export a plain text version of the transcript for your producers:

Go to the Text tool, under the Transcripts tab.

Click the Three Dot menu in the top right of the window and select Export to text fileNOTE: The Export Transcript option saves a proprietary Adobe transcript formatted file that cannot be read by a standard text editor.

Choose the destination and file name for the transcript and select Save.

While Premiere can generate CEA-608 and CEA708 caption formats, it can only export directly to a SRT or Text file. Currently the Text tool cannot export to SCC, CAP, or other caption formats.

To export a SRT or Text caption file:

Go to the Text tools Captions tab.

Click the Three Dot menu and selected either Export to SRT File or Export to text file

Choose the destination and file name for the transcript and select Save.

Premiere Pro On M1 Macs

With native support for M1 on Mac, Adobe states Premiere Pro runs nearly 80% faster than comparable Intel-based Macs. Along with Premiere Pro, you get M1 support for Media Encoder and Character Animator as well.

M1 support for After Effects will be introduced in public Beta later this year. After Effects, integration features within Premiere Pro, such as Dynamic Link and Motion Graphics templates, have already been optimized for M1-powered Macs.

Speech To Text Using Speech Analysis In Premiere Pro Creative Cloud

Premiere Pro CS6 has the ability to turn speech into text and put it into the Speech Analysis metadata. You can still use it in any version of Premiere Pro.

In Premiere CS6 you can right+click on a piece of footage and select Analyze Content. This would turn all the speech into text. Adobe removed it in later versions of Creative Cloud but all that infrastructure is still in Premiere Pro CC 2018 and this post will tell you how to make use of it with, and without, Transcriptive, our plugin for transcribing video.

First off, if you have Creative Cloud, you still have access to CS6 . You can download it and use that to turn all your speech to text. This will get saved with your file and when you import it into Premiere 2018, all the text will be in the Speech Analysis field of the Metadata panel. This is very handy as you can use the text with the Source panel to set in and out points and edit with text.

To get older versions of Premiere, go to the Creative Cloud app and find Premiere Pro. Click the menu button and select Other Versions. You can install all the way back to CS6.

Transcriptive can also use that data. If youre using Transcriptive and drop the footage into a sequence, itll pull the text from the Speech Analysis field.

As mentioned, the CS6 speech-to-text isnt very accurate, which you can see below. So its usually worth it to pay a few cents a minute to get a good A.I. transcript or $1.25/min to get human transcripts .

Lets take a moment to recall that this is not Adobes first attempt at releasing a tool for converting recorded audio into editable text. Speech Analysis was added to Premiere Pro back in 2013. It wasnot great.

When I tested it back then, the best description for the results it produced would be word salad.

But to be fair, the same was also true of other software at that time. Googles auto-transcription for YouTube videos was just as unreliable. As put it in my experience it does such a bad job that the time itd take me to correct it is considerably more than the time itd take me to transcribe it myself.

And that, in a nutshell, was the problem. So it wasnt really surprising that Adobe pulled Speech Analysis from public release in 2014, and stayed silent on the matter until the fabulous Jason Levine brought it back into the spotlight in 2020.
