Ever since COVID began, I have been on the hunt for practical and FREE websites that I can use for my speech tele-therapy sessions. Since last year, I have come across several great websites that I frequently use for therapy book recommendations, parent resources, reinforcer games – you name it! I have book marked many of these websites on my internet browser and I highly recommend that you do too for quick access! Whether you are a monolingual SLP, bilingual SLP, and/or a parent, these websites will sure be handy. I have listed some of my favorite websites below, make sure to check them out and let me know if I missed any of your favorite go-to websites!

What Is Speech Therapy

Speech therapy is when a certified practitioner, known as a speech-language pathologist works with an adult or child who has a communication difficulty such as spoken and written language issues, speech difficulties, stuttering, voice disorders, reading, and swallowing. SL-Ps help to identify the disorder, evaluate it, and provide treatment for it. Education regarding specific communication disorders, how speech therapy can help and what you as a parent or caregiver can do is an important focus of assessment and treatment.

Why Is Speech Therapy So Important

If not addressed in a timely manner, struggles with communication can have a lifelong effect. As children get older and have a communication difficulty, it can be more difficult for them to make friends or be successful in school. If the problems persist into adulthood there can be many after effects socially, academically and professionally. Adults with communication issues may find themselves struggling in their work and personal lives. Early intervention with speech therapy is key to success at any age. Speech Therapy Toronto

Why Do Some Kids Need Speech

Kids might need speech-language therapy for many reasons, including:

    • hearing impairments
    • cognitive or other developmental delays
    • weak oral muscles
    • feeding and swallowing disorders
    • traumatic brain injury

Therapy should begin as soon as possible. Children who start therapy early tend to have better results than those who begin later.

This doesn’t mean that older kids won’t do well in therapy. Their progress might be slower, though, because they have learned patterns that need to be changed.

    Cognitive Aspects Of Communication

Tera Sumpter, MA, CCC-SLPs book, The Seeds of Learning: A Cognitive Processing Model for Speech, Language, Literacy & Executive Functioning, explains how to assess for executive function, which is essential for language development.

HoneyComb Speech has low prep materials you can use in your sessions with adults. SimplePractice also has a free Ask The Experts webinar that takes an interdisciplinary look at stroke care.

As Speech Pathologist’s I know we have a lot on our plate.

This section of our website is to provide speech therapy resources to make the lives of SLPs easier and help them be more organized.

First of all, I will admit, I go crazy when I’m not organized.

It’s just the way I am.

I have seen a lot of different tools on the internet and tried to compile as speech therapy resources into this section as possible.

I will always be adding more to this page as I get new ones.

Quick Games And Toys For Speech Therapy

    • Spot It: I absolutely love playing Spot It in speech therapy! Students across grade and age levels are interested in this game. Its a super easy way to get a quick brain break in after drill work.
    • Jumping Frogs Toy: This is a quick and easy way to make articulation or phonology practice more fun! Place this phonology worksheet on a table and see if your speech therapy student can make a frog hop to the target word!
    • Generic Game Board Pieces: These are just nice to have on hand- you never know when you will need extra players! Also, you can create your own sticky note or poster board games using these pieces.
    • Kids Card Games: I have this particular card game pack for my own kids. My favorite game in this pack is Slap Jack. No reading is required to play this game. Each player takes turns going around in a circle placing a card down without looking at it first. When a red card with a mosquito is placed down, everyone tries to be the first to slap it! This would make any drill-play session exciting.
    • Travel Tic Tac Toe: Tic tac toe is another motivating activity to use in speech therapy. Try out a small travel version for on-the-go sessions, or keep it near on your therapy table.
    • Uno: this classic card game is perfect for your elementary speech therapy students. Its also small and easy to take on the go, or store in your art caddy. Try pairing it with this articulation activity.
