Everyone learns at a different pace, so it may take one person longer to learn sign language than others. It also depends on how much time you have to devote to learning sign language and how quickly you pick up new concepts and remember them. Some classes are self-paced, and others can take up to six weeks to complete. By the time youre finished with a class, you should have a better understanding of sign language but may not be completely fluent. In general, it can take several years of regular practice to become fluent in sign language.

Why Did I Learn Asl
As a young girl, I have no idea how young, but around the time when you first start making memories, my Mama and Grandmama read me Kokoâs Kitten.
Koko is the gorilla that was taught sign language. It is the sweetest story. To this day, I follow Koko and what sheâs up to.
As silly as it may sound, this gorilla inspired my fascination and love of sign language. As I grew older, my reasons grew.
I read every book I could on Helen Keller. I can still remember my favorite copy of her biography that had letters in braille on the back cover.
I knew ASL was something that had to be in my life and I would use for the rest of my days.

The good news is that there are no real drawbacks to using signs with your young children. Many parents express concern that signing will delay the expression of verbal communication.
No studies have ever found that to be true, and there are some that suggest the exact opposite effect.
There are studies that suggest the use of sign language doesnt help infants and toddlers acquire verbal language earlier than usual, but even these studies dont show that signing delays the ability to talk.
