A Clever Idea That Falls Flat
I only made it halfway through my set. But I can’t imagine how completing all 3 levels would get you out of what I would definitely call basic level.
Rosetta Stoneâs philosophy is a clever idea, but Iâve learned much faster with other methods.
An example in unit one to teach you basic conjugation through pictures and no explanation.
One thing I did like was Rosetta Stoneâs audio. I tried something similar when I reviewed Pimsleur in great detail. Pimsleur is only audio, so you would think their audio would be superior, but I actually prefer Rosetta Stone’s audio.
Apart from instructions , everything is in the target language. The audio is based on what you would have gone through so far for that unit, so you should actually recognise everything.
If you click on âExtended Learningâ in the menu tab, you can access the Audio Companion, which allows you to download the audio for on-the-go listening. I like this feature a lot. Itâs helpful for studying on a run, for instance.

But even though it’s an improvement on Pimsleur, I still found it a bit tedious after a few sessions.
Actual native content such as a podcast would have been more helpful to recreate an immersive environment.
But of course, it’s all part of the greater whole of the program. They aim to only present you with words you should know already.
This makes it an enjoyable learning environment, although hardly a realistic one in my view.

How Good Is Rosetta Stone
Does it work to learn languages with?
The short answer is yes.
Rosetta Stone uses a basic memory technique, whereby you learn the languages through immersion and visual content.
It will definitely help you learn vocabulary in the languages that they offer.
And, the company wouldn’t have been able to survive for 28 years if the product didn’t at least work somewhat.
The reason that this isn’t enough to recommend Rosetta stone is because I believe there are better, cheaper, and more interesting methods available today.
How Does Rosetta Stone Work The Rosetta Stone Philosophy
Iâll admit, Rosetta Stone has an interesting philosophy. It only uses your target language, right from the start.
Yes, thatâs right. Rosetta Stone never uses your native language.
Rosetta Stone explained that they were founded by people who appreciated learning by immersion. These founders had learned languages abroad in immersive environments. They wanted to emulate this as close as possible for people who can’t travel.
Of course I have other recommendations if you can’t travel. But the base concept makes sense.
What I disagree with is how itâs packaged as a generic version of immersion across all languages. More on that later.

One interesting aspect is how they have no English at all in the program apart from interface and menus. They never present a translation of anything. It’s all represented in photos and untranslated audio and text.
While there are major issues with this, the idea of not using your native language is an interesting one.

Rosetta Stone Unlimited Languages Review
In addition to its individual language courses, Rosetta Stone offers an unlimited languages subscription. This gives you access to all of its language courses for one price. If you enjoy Rosetta Stones teaching method, the unlimited languages subscription is definitely worth it.
This is especially true if you want to learn more popular languages like Spanish and French. The Rosetta Stone unlimited languages subscription is perfect for casual language learners who want to learn the basics of multiple languages, but dont necessarily want to become fluent in all of them.
Rosetta Stone Arabic Review
The Rosetta Stone Arabic course has 12 units that help you learn some general vocabulary and grammar. It only teaches Modern Standard Arabic though, which isnt really useful for talking to native speakers. Other apps like Pimsleur offer more common dialects like Egyptian and Eastern Arabic.
You also dont learn how to read or write in Arabic with Rosetta Stone. Overall, its good for learning some basics, but wont help you reach an intermediate Arabic level and also teaches Modern Standard Arabic, which isnt super useful. You can find other apps to learn Arabic if thats your goal.

Killer Voice Recognition Technology
The first strength of this program is that during lessons, Rosetta Stone utilizes what they call their TruAccent voice recognition technology. This is something the company has spent years developing, and it is darn good.
When youre asked to repeat words or phrases, fill in blanks, or otherwise describe whats happening in the various images you see during the lessons, Rosettas TruAccent technology listens to you speak. If you mispronounce a word or phrase, it will prompt you to say it again until you get it right.
To be clear, its definitely not a perfect system, or a substitute for speaking with another human being. But all things considered, its actually pretty accurate .
To be fair to Babbel here, they also employ their own voice recognition technology during verbal drills, which is fairly good as well. So this is not to give the impression that this is an overwhelming win for Rosetta Stone.
Still, I have to hand it to their voice recognition technology its about as close as you can come to getting pronunciation feedback from a real person.

We choose to teach the formal register first and primarily, believing that this will provide our learners with a foundation that will serve them well over their language-learning journey. We know that theres even more we can teach, in every language, and were always considering ways to improve and expand on what we already offer.
As we continue to add new, situational content, we are focusing on practical language using whatever register is appropriate for those interactions.

The additional features like Seek & Speak and Audio Companion can help improve your conversational Japanese. If you want to learn how to read and write though, youll need to use another app like Rocket Languages or Drops.

Rosetta Stone Vs Duolingo: The Verdict
Duolingo has more followers than an Instagram star, and Rosetta Stones heart is still beating after two decades. So both must have something to them right?
Well, I do think both can be effective tools for learning vocabulary, sentence structure and the basics of grammar. What I dont think is that youll ever reach fluency by relying solely on one of these apps. Neither offers a fully immersive experience you’re just learning words and phrases.
That said, many people swear by these apps and I think if one of them matches your learning style, you could gain something from signing up as an absolute beginner.
In short:
Rosetta Stone is a good choice if you learn best with pictures and memory techniques. It gives you thorough pronunciation practice of individual words and sentences, with a focus on phonetics. If youre not a lover of flashcard learning, these exercises wont thrill you, but youll probably remember basic speech patterns well.
Duolingo is super fun and inspiring for beginners. If you stick with the game and practice daily, you could easily reach a lower-intermediate level. But I dont believe youll go beyond that its better for casual learners who want to get the gist of a language before committing to a more concrete course. Mind you, its ideal if you want to just get an idea and compare a few different languages before committing. Also, how many other apps offer Navajo, Yiddish and Esperanto?

- Its completely free to use and with so many languages to choose from, this opens up a whole world of language to explore! I love that Duolingo is so accessible to people in all situations. This is also awesome if you arent quite sure what to study and want to check out a few options before committing.
- You dont need much motivation to do a lesson theyre quick, friendly and engaging, so you kind of look forward to it.
- Duolingo is handy for beginners who want to learn some vocabulary, phrases and basic sentence structure.
- The app works very well across devices and lessons are synched, which is super convenient. This means if youre on the go, you can just use your phone to pick up where you left off.
- The lesson reviews are optional, but you do get reminded and encouraged to do them. This is helpful and pushes you to remember things covered in older lessons.
- The Stories section is quite cool its the one and only place youll get to hear a more continuous flow of language. These little paragraphs are there to test your reading comprehension an important skill. I like that you can click on the audio lines to hear them again.
