ABA Day Care Programs
Participating in daycare activities such as circle time, following directions and interacting appropriately with other children is a common challenge for many children on the autism spectrum. Developing Minds offers individualized aba therapy programs within the daycare setting to support children with learning, the acquisition of new skills outside of the home and getting ready for school. ABA support at daycare is a better option to centre based programs for many children with asd because it provides them with the opportunity to play, interact and learn from typically developing children. Our daycare programs are geared to help children develop the ability to understanding and following directions, get toilet trained, participate in group activities and build functional communication skills. Step : Create Scenarios
I like to structure play-based therapy using scenarios or scenes that my students can relate to. By choosing a scenario I can have a pretty good idea of words, phrases and concepts that can be easily woven into the therapy session. Sometimes they will take the play in a direction I didnt see, but the vast majority of the time it goes off as planned.
Once I have my scenario chosen and my targets laid out, Im ready to dive in with the students. By preparing this in advance I can make sure that I have everything I need for students to get the repetitions they need to practice their target skills.

Bury Objects Or Picture Cards
Hide objects or speech cards in a sandbox at the playground or under a pile of leaves, and have the player find them. When they do, have them pronounce the objects name or the word on the card. To add another element to this game, have them use the word in a sentence.

Play Based Speech And Language Therapy
What is play based speech and language therapy and why should you do it? Play based speech and language therapy is when a speech language pathologist focuses on a childs speech and language goals around play . Not only does play based therapy increase the childs attention and engagement, it also allows you to target their goals in a more functional and naturalistic aspect. First, lets talk about the types of play
Types of Play:
Unoccupied Play– a baby or child makes movements with their legs, hands, arms, feet, etc. to discover and learn about how their body moves
Solitary Play– a child plays by themselves
Spectator/Onlooker Play– a child begins to watch others play, but does not yet join in play with them
Parallel Play– a child plays alongside or near other children, but does not play directly with them
Associative Play– a child begins to play with others, but sometimes plays by themselves
Cooperative Play– a child plays with others and shows interest in both the activity and the other children that they are playing with
How Can You Incorporate Play Into Therapy?
- Keep it feeling natural and not clinician-based by reducing the demands
- Dont engage in drills or ask them to repeat after you
- Do model their specific targets
- Follow the childs lead
- Dont sit back and watch
- Do get on their level and interact with them
- Provide them with choices of 2-3 toys, games, or activities
- Dont provide them with toys, games, or activities that are beyond their developmental age
Step : Make Your Targets Memorable
The last thing I like to do is make sure that our play activities are fun and memorable for the kids. By doing this, the student is more likely to remember the lesson and activities afterward. It also provides them with an experience that they re-enact at a later time.
Some of my favorite ways to increase engagement and make our play-based therapy memorable is through toys and games, hands-on activities, cooking activities and crafts. While some are better for a play-based therapy approach ALL are great for engaging students during therapy sessions.

Here Is How My Sessions Are Structured:
1 First, I look at the minimal pairs sets that I have already chosen for my client. Using fronting as an example, I might have the sets: cape/tape, key/tea, bike/bite, go/dough
2 Next, I consider the toys and activities I have in my therapy room and I choose one pair that would work well with those things. I am looking for items that will allow for natural opportunities to produce the words in the set. For example, if I am working on go/dough, I might choose a toy car and some play doh. We could use the dough to make a road for the car to “go”, hide the cars in the dough then take them out and have them “go” race, etc.
3 Finally, I follow these steps during our play:- I teach the words to ensure understanding. They might have already been familiarized with the minimal pair set but now that we are incorporating toys into the mix, we need to make sure the student understands the meaning these toys hold.- I organize a play-based activity to elicit trials of both words in the minimal pair set.- Once the child is becoming more accurate with their productions, I organize a play-based activity to elicit just productions of the target pattern.

The Importance Of Play
Play is the language of children. Through play, children learn so much. They learn to problem-solve, to communicate, to regulate emotions, and to think creatively. Play-based speech therapy is when an SLP plans speech and language therapy activities around a play activity or toy, to engage the child. The SLP creates opportunities for the child to practice the target skill or goal area, while engaged in a motivating play activity.
Speech and language therapy sessions can be designed in many different ways. Play-based therapy is a common approach for children under the age of 5 but can be used with children of all ages.
When you first hear that your child will engage in play-based therapy activities, you may ask how is this different from their regular play? How will this approach help with their language development? To answer those questions, it is important to understand the role of play in language development. It also helps to understand the stages and types of play. Think of play-based therapy tasks as playful learning.
A Cooking Session Together
Most kids love to help their parents in the kitchen. Its messy, fun and can also increase their language skills. So, whip out the aprons and prepare some lemonade, bake brownies or even make a pizza. Give them step-by-step verbal and/or visual instructions. This will help enhance their receptive language while learning new vocabulary words, like mix, bowl, and spoon.

Example Of A Session:
Child is fronting. I choose tape/cape as the target. I let the child cut out a cape out of construction paper and I grab blue painters tape. I spend a moment explaining each item and the meaning of the words we will be working on. Then, the child and I tape mini objects around the room. We talk about how these minis are in trouble and we need our super hero cape to save them. We fly the cape around the room, removing the minis and taping them to the cape. During this we are pausing before removing the minis and placing them on the cape to get several trials of these two words. Once all the minis are saved, we talk about what is on the cape while only getting productions of the target pattern: “cape”. If you’d like to see a video of this example, you can click HERE.
Why Do We Use It
Play can be used as an extremely insightful assessment of a childs verbal and nonverbal linguistic abilities, as well as an invaluable therapy technique. It provides useful information about how the child learns best, while building off of the subset of skills the child already has. Play-based intervention increases the childs motivation to participate in the session, and significantly increases the amount of opportunities to learn. The increased participation and interest in the session help facilitate an overall positive therapeutic environment and relationship between the speech therapist and the child, which is essential to any intervention method.

But What About Using Play While Addressing Speech Sound Disorders
I have personally found so much success incorporating play into my phono sessions. But, what does the research say about it?!
Well I couldnt actually find any research specifically about using play while addressing speech sound disorders . But, we can look at the research for each approach individually and use our clinical expertise to make informed decisions.
So, lets focus on minimal pairs therapy. What does the research say about that?
– Minimal Pairs is an evidence based phonological intervention.
– The approach uses pairs of words that differ by one phoneme. These pairs are used to emphasize the semantics/meaning of the words in naturalistic contexts.
– The approach focuses on familiarization , auditory discrimination , and production .

Taking into consideration the research on both play-based therapy and minimal pairs therapy, you could see how combining the two could result in some great therapy sessions.I have seen success incorporating play into my minimal pairs therapy due to the increase in the child’s motivation and participation. There is also a greater semantic connection to the target words and the child’s actions than there is when you are just using picture cards. The child’s production of the minimal pairs set has a direct impact on the actions that are performed during play .

What Are The Benefits
Play-based therapy has a wide variety of benefits, including progress towards speech and language goals through increased opportunities for gesture, vocalizations and word use.While expressive language skills are enhanced, receptive language skills, or understanding language and the meaning of words, can also be increased through play-based therapy.The child-initiated aspect of this technique ensures that there is an increase in the motivation to learn, as well, meaning the child participates more actively in their learning. Since the session involves shared attention between the child, the clinician, and the materials/activities being used , play-based therapy helps to increase social and emotional skills, and also helps teach self-regulation as the child interacts with a communication partner.

Try A Little Bit Of Sabotage
Sometimes, a little frustration can be a good thing, especially if it motivates children to communicate.
Weve already mentioned the power of giving your child two choices and letting them pick. But what if you deliberately give them the wrong one? This creates the opportunity for your child to correct your mistake!
You can also try positioning your childs toys or a tasty treat just slightly out of their reach. While they may be temporarily upset, this simple act of sabotage can quickly teach children they need to use language to request help.
Back to our previous tip above, if they do say help or open, try expanding their request to a two-word phrase, like help me or open please.

Play-based therapy is something I like to use in my therapy sessions because it makes our time seem less like work and more like fun! I dont know about you but when the students are having fun they are more like to actively participate, and that includes with their oral language. Play-based therapy is great because it uses enjoyable activities such as playing with toys to target speech and language development and goals.
It is great for young children because while it may look and feel like regular playtime, it is actually so much more. Play not only provides a context for learning, but it can also be very fun and motivating for a child! It also goes hand in hand with building strong cognitive skills and language development.
