Tips To Encourage Language Development
The key to language development is interaction and along with interaction comes encouragement. Here are a few tips to help encourage children as they develop language.
- Pay attention to your child when they are talking to you
- Praise good speech and vocabulary
- Help with new words by repeating them
- Add onto phrases or words and boost vocabulary
- Never make fun of mistakes correct gently by repeating the sentence correctly
- Use TV and screens sparingly
- Check your child for ear infections
- Talk about what you are doing as you go about daily chores
- Be a good role model
The rate children learn new words is amazing. They are like little sponges soaking up every word they hear.

Play And Language Development
Ah! Play, is it really that important to language development in preschoolers and toddlers? The answer is YES! If you have been around Discovery Building Sets much, you will see that we believe all children need more time to play
So, how do you encourage language development in toddlers and preschoolers? Language development through play, includes reading, singing, talking, playing games, block play, and more.
Language Development In Children At 5
By five years, children know that words are made of different sounds and syllables. When theyre listening, they can identify words beginning with the same sound for example, Mummy made magic marshmallows. They can also notice words that sound the same and play rhyming games with words like bat, cat, fat, hat and mat.
At 5-6 years, your child might know some or all of the sounds that go with the different letters of the alphabet. This is an important first step in learning to read. At this age, children also learn that single sounds combine together into words. For example, when you put the t, o and p sounds together, they make the word top.
By six years, children start to read simple stories with easy words that sound the way theyre spelled, like pig, door or ball. Theyre also starting to write or copy letters of the alphabet, especially the letters for the sounds and words theyre learning.
By eight years, your child understands what theyre reading. Your child might read on their own, and reading might even be one of their favourite activities. By this age children can also write a simple story.

Teach Them The Common Greetings
Your child is never too young to hear âhi,â âbye,â âgood morningâ and âgood night.â Begin from their infancy. Whenever you see them in the morning, say âgood morningâ followed by your childâs name. During bedtime, always wish them âgood night.â
Urge them to say âhiâ and âbyeâ to family members and friends. These will be the foundation of social skills that your child will need throughout their life.
Don’t Correct Or Criticize
Just like everything else we learn in life, there will be a learning curve with your child’s language development. If their tenses, verbs, or pronunciation are off, don’t jump to correct or criticize them. They may interpret this feedback negatively and be reluctant to keep tryingor they’ll feel embarrassed. Instead, try repeating the sentence back with the corrected verbiage.

Word Families With Ping
Teach simple word families with this activity suggested by Fun-A-Day. Golf tees stuck in a Styrofoam base create the perfect platform to interchange different letters written on ping-pong balls. Dig becomes pig with just one switch! This game lends itself to giggling and throwing the ping-pong balls, and all shenanigans can count as literacy training.

Words can be a lot of fun if we know how to maximise their use. Together, they can be made up into stories, songs, and a whole lot of other things that will help your children be more eloquent. Language Development Milestones 4
Between 4 to 5 years, your child is well on their way to understanding and using complex language abilities.
With as much as your child is learning, it is important that you set a good example of language skills.
Remember that even though they are soaking up information like a sponge, they still dont know how to use it all the right way.
We dont use perfect grammar all the time and sometimes we use uncommon slang words, so ..please use good judgement.

If you are not familiar with the age-old favourites buy a CD or listen to songs on YouTube. Driving in the car is a perfect time to play nursery rhymes . Singing silly songs together will increase your childs vocabulary in an entertaining way.

Play The Telephone Game
A toy telephone can be an active part of your little ones playtime. Get a pair of toy telephones and pretend that you are dialling his number to call him. Encourage him to pick up the phone and answer. Teach him how to say hello when he answers the phone. Childrens Book In A Bottle
Storytime has a hands-on element with Deborah J. Stewarts discovery bottles activity. These cheap and completely customizable literacy tools could be thrown together in an afternoon as a kinesthetic addition to your kids favorite stories. Developing Conversation And Storytelling
Your child will keep getting better at storytelling, although they might sometimes give too much or not enough information. They might also have trouble telling things in order and making it clear who theyre talking about. Their story endings might not make sense or might seem sudden.
But your child will also be better at seeing things from other peoples points of view, so they might add useful background information in conversation. For example, I went to Maxs and we had cake and Max is from my preschool.
Your child will be getting better at taking turns in conversations with a group of people. And theyll start talking at the right volume for the situation. They might make requests more politely, using words like can, would and could. Their requests might also be less direct and obvious. For example, your child might say, That smells good! when they want something to eat.
And your child will begin to use language to tease and tell jokes. They might laugh at silly or made-up words.
Growing up in a bilingual or multilingual family doesnt affect how early or quickly children learn to use language. Sometimes multilingual or bilingual children mix their languages for a while, but this stops once they understand that theyre using more than one language.

Serve + Return Conversations
Serve-and-return is taking turns communicating with your child. This could as simple as exchanging smiles.
For children who arent verbal yet, serve-and-return is responding to their coos, cries, and squeals.
Focusing on the rhythm of a serve-and-return conversation helps young toddlers learn how to communicate.
What Is A Language Development Delay
First, lets establish what exactly a language development delay is. A language development delay is when a child has difficulty understanding or using spoken language at an age where it should come naturally to them.
Examples of speech and language that a child could be struggling with include:

Talk About Pictures In The Book
That bunny is getting tired. He is in his bed. He is going night-night. Night, night, Bunny. Talking about the pictures helps children develop a better understanding of what is happening in the story. Sometimes, instead of reading the actual words in the book, you can simply talk about the pictures on each page.
