Pre-K children love to write they’re always in search of a marker or crayon. Those early scribbles are an important step on the path to literacy and it’s never too early to start. When engaging in writing, young children often mirror what they see around them adults and older children writing lists, notes, text messaging. First Scribbling And Drawing
Most children begin their writing career by scribbling and drawing. Grasping the crayon or pencil with a full fist, a young scribbling child is exploring with space and form. He is creating a permanent record of his ideas and thoughts. These first scribbles can be proud accomplishments! Thick markers, crayons, and unlined paper are good writer’s tools for this stage.

Make An Alphabet Noodle Bracelet
Materials:Light weight cardboard such as from cereal boxesUncooked Alphabet shaped noodlesGlueYarn
- Cut out a piece of cardboard that is about ½ inch wide and long enough to fit around childs wrist. Spell out childs name -or any other word with the alphabet noodles. Be sure to place your word in the center of the cardboard strip and glue them in place. Allow the glue to dry when glue is dry punch, a hole in each end of the cardboard.
- Cut a piece of yarn that is about six inches long and string each end up through each hole on the bracelet and tie the bracelet to fit the wrist.
Tip: You can leave as isor before you tie the bracelet paint it using acrylic paints or spray paints. Make sure to apply thin coats of either paint and allow the paint to dry. If using acrylic paint make sure to use a sealer as well.
Get a box of alphabet pasta and let the kids have fun!

Early Literacy Activities For Preschoolers
1. Letter cookie cutters in play dough.
This is such an easy preschool letter activity, but you can do so much with it. You can make letter cookies, make and squish letters, use the cookie cutters like stamps in big mounds of play dough the sky is the limit. Playdough is a wonderful way for young children to build the hand strength needed for writing skills. I like to sit down and look for my letter and casually ask the child next to me if they want their letter. This leads to finding other classmates letters usually or sometimes it falls flat, thats OK dont push. Early reading skills start with play, so have fun!
I love putting out my letter fish, but I have also found that these jar lid letters work beautifully for this activity. They are especially great for not-so-gentle toddler hands. My Prek students love this letter recognition game and take turns playing teacher. If you dont have time to make these fish, just use magnetic letters instead!

There is something so satisfying about banging a stamp down. Using letter stamps gives children who arent able to write yet a way to make letters they can recognize. Fun colored ink pads take it from plain Jane to a fine art!

Supporting Language And Literacy Skills From 1224 Months
The idea of babies and toddlers talking and reading can seem incredible. It isnt necessary to teach very young children, but learn how you can begin to help your child develop their language and literacy skills.
It is hard to imagine them debating with you about curfews or curling up with the newest Harry Potter book. But language and literacy skills start earlyfrom birth. Watching your baby and learning how she communicates through sounds, facial expressions, and gestures are all important ways to help her learn about language and the written word.
It isnt necessary to teach very young children. Formal classes and other activities that push babies and toddlers to read and write words do not help their development or make the do better in school. In fact, they can even make children feel like failures when they are pushed to do something they dont enjoy or that is beyond their skills.
Early language and literacy skills are learned best through everyday moments with your childreading books, talking, laughing, and playing together. Children learn language when you talk to them and they communicate back to you, and by hearing stories read and songs sung aloud. Children develop early literacy skills when you give them the chance to play with and explore books and other written materials like magazines, newspapers, take-out menus, markers, and crayons.
Language and literacy, while two different skills, build on one another in important ways.
Sand Play And Sensory Trays
Sensory vocabulary is developed through sand play and sensory trays. A sensory tray filled with different objects encourages language as your children touch and talk about items in the tray.
Choose things with different textures and sizes. Mix them up for sorting experiences. Look for things like buttons, corks, pebbles, pasta, blocks and Lego.
A sandpit under a shady tree is always a talking point and an opportunity for digging, building and playing with sand toys.

Fun With Paper Plates
Paper plates are so versatile and there are many activities you can do and crafts you can make with them. Have a pile in store for rainy days.
Keep a box of creative waste materials like stickers, glue, wool, felt pieces, old magazines, coloured licky sticky paper and and stamps. Let your kids experiment with making masks and other creative crafts.
Make A Letter Collage
When working on individual letter-lessons, help children find those letters of the alphabet in the newspaper headlines or a magazine cover. They can find and cut out those letters and then make a collage. Letter pages can be compiled into a booklet. To add to the lesson, items that begin with THAT letter can be cut out and glued to an additional page.
Routinely have the children write thank you NOTES and make birthday and holiday CARDS.

1. Childrens writing tools including colored, medium and soft lead pencils, pens with variety of ink colors, markers, crayons and chalk in variety of colors.2. FOUR TO SIX AGE bracket:Buy books that combine bright, interesting pictures with a story line that keeps children interested. Popular books for young children include books with stories about families and day-to- day events. This is because children enjoy associating what they read with their own lives.

Importance Of Early Literacy For Kids
There are many benefits and advantages of early literacy. Because literacy is the foundation to all other learning, it is one of the most important aspects of early childhood development.
Early literacy helps children to communicate.
Things such as exposing children to a range of different reading and writing materials from a young age can benefit children in their early years, even if there is no formal learning.
Children who do not have access to these tools and opportunities may find it difficult to find means of communication and it can affect their behaviour due to not being able to express their needs and wants.
Early literacy is also important for children who are starting school. The more children are exposed to reading and writing activities at home, the more prepared they will be to start a formal education.

What I Think Activity
Either have the children writeor pre-write the words, I think on their papers.1. Below the phrase, I think Have them write a few phrases about what they may think about. 2. Next have the children trace over what they wrote with a marker. They cut out the marker words and glue each phrase on a separate sheet of paper. This may be done anyway they choose to do itbut one phrase to a sheet or paper.3. When complete, the children follow this with finding pictures in magazines and newspapers of things they like or think about. They glue their pictures on the appropriate pages. The pages are then put together into a booklet. The children share their books and pages with one another. This project can be done in two or three stages.Example:I think about my friends. .

Cold Weather Snow Pictures And Words
Materials: spray bottles filled with colored water food coloring and snow.Gather several spray bottles.Fill each with water and add food coloring to tint it. Use colored water to paint pictures in the snow. You can add a winter twist to vocabulary lessons by having children illustrate vocabulary words in the snow. Select one student at a time and demonstrate his or her vocabulary word. The child can draw it in the snow for the rest of the group to guess. The child who guesses correctly gets the next turn.TIP: Small spray bottles are difficult for even adults to do thistry larger spray bottles. Additionally, plastic containers such as dishwashing detergent bottles and ketchup bottles work great for this acitivity!
Criticisms Of Early Literacy
There are some criticisms of early literacy. It is believed that teaching children from an early age can be detrimental to their learning.
The school of thought is that children should be involved only in play and that early literacy does not have a role in this space.
The amazing thing about early literacy is that it is not taught through formal means. Children learn and develop early literacy skills through play, reading with others and by being involved in every day activities in their home with their family and in the community.
A trip to the supermarket to do the groceries provides literacy skills such as spoken language though interactions and the written word through signs and labels. I have included some ideas below that can make this easy and fun.
