Theres No Substitute For Preparation

How To Write a Motivational Speech | How to Be a Tedx Speaker

Theres just no substitute for preparation. Even the best speakers must prepare.

In fact, preparation is the primary reason theyre good speakers. It doesnt just happen even when youre especially talented or gifted.

Never cheat on preparation. Youll only regret it later.

Preparation begins long before speech day. We can divide the preparation process into 6 phases.

  • The Qualification
  • Even the Evaluation phase is a form of preparation, as it prepares you for your next speech.

    How Inspiration Impacts People

Inspiration helps propel people forward. It pushes apathy away and awakens people to new and exciting possibilities. They’re able to transcend their limitations and mundane lives.

It can help all people to become more creative and help them to progress toward their goals if they are open to it.

Although inspiration impacts people in several meaningful and often magical ways, it is not something as elusive as it seems. Inspiration is everywhere, and it can be captured, activated, and manipulated.

Most often, inspiration is found in others who say something or do something thought provoking and meaningful.

    Get The Audiences Attention

Lets face it: people have short attention spans. And if you dont hook them right away, they will most likely tune out. You can ask them a question, tell a story, tell a joke, play a video, or arouse their curiosity. Whatever you do, dont start out saying, What Im going to talk about is or Hi my name is B-o-r-i-n-g. As often as I tell my students not to do that, many of them do. And inevitably, they are not the good speeches. So dont forget the attention-grabber right away.

Ellie Meets An Alien In Contact

Youre an interesting species, an interesting mix. You are capable of such beautiful dreams, and such horrible nightmares. You feel so lost, so cut off, so alone. Only youre not. See, in all our searching, the only thing that weve found that makes the emptiness bearable is each other.

While this Sci-Fi classic might seem removed from reality, it offers uplifting advice for the workplace and beyond. In this scene, Ellie finally makes contact with an alien who offers insight into the human condition and the larger universe. To apply the aliens words to the workplace, think of the power of teamwork.Establishing a diverse and talented team can improve employee happiness and performance. For example, burnout is a common problem at companies. Sharing the workload, and knowing you can rely on team members and managers for support, can re-motivate employees. When the going gets tough, its a comfort to know youre not alone.

Use Storytelling To Make Your Point

How To Write A Motivational Speech For Students?

People love stories. Telling a story keeps people engaged and it allows you to deliver your message in a way that isnt awkward or heavy-handed. When you write a speech, you can use storytelling in two ways. First, you can use storytelling as a tool to introduce your topic and to get your audience interested in what you have to say next. Second, you can use a storytelling structure to deliver your speech. To do this, you can weave a story throughout your speech, or you can simply deliver a speech that has a beginning middle, and end. Simply following the three-act structure that people associate with storytelling will make your speech more engaging.

J.K. Rowlings 2008 Harvard commencement speech is all about the benefits of failure.

She starts the speech with her typical sense of self-deprecating humor, even though she is the most successful childrens author who has ever lived.

Rowling shares how the first Harry Potter novel was rejected dozens of times, and how her faith in herself kept her going through the rejection.

Take Notes And Organize Your Thoughts

Youll want your motivational speech to be as emotionally impactful and inspiring to your audience as possible. Ensure your speech makes an impact by taking notes to structure your thoughts. First determine the purpose for the occasion and the message you wont to convey.

Then jot down potential angles and key talking points to expand upon. If you refer to your notes during your speech, make sure they are as brief and concise as possible. Notes are a great way to structure your motivational speech in a manner that is cohesive and specially crafted to better resonate emotionally with your audience.

The Superstar Scoop: How To Write An Inspirational Speech

A great speech can change someone’s beliefs or behaviors, it can fill them with the motivation and energy to make an impact, and it can give people the fuel to change themselves and change the world.

A great speech can, in a word, INSPIRE.

Over the 15+ years of my speaking career, I put together an easy 5-part formula for crafting an effective inspirational speech or any kind of speech, really that will help your message be engaging and effective.

This is not the ONLY way to write an effective and inspiring speech, but it’s a way that seems to always work, and I use it every time I’m going to present content.

In a nutshell, the formula is: Why, What, Who, How, Now.

#1 The Why Painting the Big Picture & The Problem

The why is painting the reason that your speech is important to the people in the room.

It’s laying out the problem that they might be facing or the pain that they might be feeling or the challenge that they might be encountering.

One way to do that is to ask questions at the beginning of your speech. And to start your speech with ways to get the audience engaged and nodding and saying yes, tell me more!

One great way to open any speech in this way to get people to lean in is to say what if?

What would it be like if? By asking a question like that, you’d do something very powerful. You get the audience into their imagination, and perhaps even into a place of desire. For example, in this blog post I shared:

    #2 The What The Solution

    Structure Of The Motivational Speech

How To Write An Inspirational Speech

Why is it important to know how to write an effective motivational speech? It could help people come to an agreement on a particular problem and find a solution to a certain issue. It is also useful for drawing peoples attention to a certain problem. As a general rule, the structure of a motivational speech is standard:

    • Introduction. It can be a very interesting comment or a shocking fact that attracts the attention of the audience
    • An argument or a position. Here you must explain it, provide evidence and reasons. Do not forget that the evidence must be relevant, and it is better to use real life examples
    • Final. The most effective ending is a call to action.

Like these accomplishments, Pinks TED Talk is a model for any speaker that needs to take a boring topic like business or politics and turn it into something inspiring and engaging. In this case, the former of these topics is presented as a puzzle. To start with, Pink explains the common economic approach to performance, saying If you want people to perform better, you reward them. Right? Thats how business works.

However, what he says next is what really puzzles you, as a listener: There is a mismatch between what science knows and what business does.the solution is not to do more of the wrong things, to entice people with a sweeter carrot, or threaten them with a sharper stick. We need a whole new approach.

Ultimately, the topic of performance in the workplace is a relatively common one and the question How do I motivate myself at work? is a common puzzle. The audience should want to know more information about your topic when youre done. They should want to come up to you after the speech and ask you to do another speech. You dont want to have them sitting there wondering if they should clap because youre done, or if youre going to keep going. Believe me, that happens to me in class all the time. Do dont do that. Simon T Bailey: To Break Through Find Your True Calling

Number nine of our motivational speech examples is a 2017 speech from Simon T. Bailey. If youre a regular SpeakerFlow blog reader, you already know there are many reasons Bailey is legendary among professional speakers. For one thing, his personal branding and digital presence are two of the best in the speaking industry. For another, his humility is seemingly endless despite his success, a trait thats perhaps best summarized in his book, Success Is An Inside Job: Success is not significance. Money is not meaning. Power isnt purpose.

In this speech, we see this idea reinforced through the third thing that sets Bailey apart, namely his speaking skills. Because hes talking to a business-oriented crowd, in many ways, this skill isnt immediately apparent. Truthfully, the first part of his speech is traditional. While its undeniably engaging, its sometimes a little hard to see why hes such a renowned orator.

Then he digs deeper. After his initial traditional approach, Bailey pivots to a creative angle, explaining how to invent your future and be unconventional in simple ways to slowly change your mindset. He then goes on to incorporate topics like emotional equity and commitment, love and respect as universally important values, and his trip to South Africa to get free. Combine this surprising switch from conventional to creative with Baileys optimistic tone, and you can almost feel the audience connecting with him.

    Conclude With A Compelling Thought

Like the hook, how you close is also important. Humans are so fickle and distracted it’s possible your audience will walk out of the room and forget everything you just said.

But, you can stay with them if you can close in a manner that lingers in their mind.

    • Ask them to take some sort of action.
    • Ask them to step outside their busy lives and do something peculiar to them.
    • Ask a rhetorical question that they can answer within their own minds.

A motivational speech is a persuasive speech. You want to foster some type of positive change. To help you along, check out these steps for writing a persuasive speech. They’ll help you pull all your thoughts together into a cohesive, yet compelling, train of thought.

Dan Pink: The Puzzle Of Motivation

There is a mismatch between what science knows and what business does. Here is what science knows. One: Those 20th century rewards, those motivators we think are a natural part of business, do work, but only in a surprisingly narrow band of circumstances. Two: Those if-then rewards often destroy creativity. Three: The secret to high performance isnt rewards and punishments, but that unseen intrinsic drive the drive to do things for their own sake. The drive to do things cause they matter.

There is an outdated belief that rewards and punishments are vital to improving employee performance. Pink argues that intrinsic drive doing things because of internal satisfaction as opposed to external factorsis the real secret to high performance. So, whether youre a manager or a new employee, consider why your work matters. Aside from your salary, what gets you to work every day? If these questions are hard to answer, you might need to incorporate or seek out a more creative approach. Pink gives the example of companies giving employees flexible schedules, where they can use their time as they want to accomplish set tasks. The schedule allows for more creativity and independence, and thus improves employee performance.

    Ensure Structure To Your Speech

You should also make sure the speech has a clear theme and convey your message as unambiguously as possible. Lastly, do not forget the ending! The conclusion of your speech should summarize everything that was said and leave the audience feeling inspired or motivated.

Rosalinde Torres: What It Takes To Be A Great Leader

So what makes a great leader in the 21st century? Ive met many, and they stand out. They are women and men who are preparing themselves not for the comfortable predictability of yesterday but also for the realities of today and all of those unknown possibilities of tomorrow.

Rosalinde Torres asserts that exceptional leaders are attuned to the world around them. They pay attention to the latest trends in their field and arent afraid to abandon tried and true practices for ones that are the future. Basically, shes advising the opposite of that popular saying, Keep your head down. Because, if you do that, youll end up reacting to the future instead of making it. Further, you wont benefit from a broadened perspective that includes different cultures, industries, and readings. Ask yourself, When is the last time I looked around me and toward the future? John Roberts, Chief Justice of the United States, gave the commencement address at his son’s high school in 2017. In his speech, he wishes the graduates bad luck instead of good luck.

He tells them that he hopes they will be lonely, fail, and lose from time to time. He says all of this to say that these things are the greatest teachers of compassion, true friendship, and sportsmanship.

The key takeaway from Roberts’ speech is that there is always a message in your misfortunes, and you should not be afraid to fail. If you fail, you should get up and try again.
