How Does Asl Compare With Spoken Language
ASL is a language completely separate and distinct from English. It contains all the fundamental features of language, with its own rules for pronunciation, word formation, and word order. While every language has ways of signaling different functions, such as asking a question rather than making a statement, languages differ in how this is done. For example, English speakers may ask a question by raising the pitch of their voices and by adjusting word order ASL users ask a question by raising their eyebrows, widening their eyes, and tilting their bodies forward.
Just as with other languages, specific ways of expressing ideas in ASL vary as much as ASL users themselves. In addition to individual differences in expression, ASL has regional accents and dialects just as certain English words are spoken differently in different parts of the country, ASL has regional variations in the rhythm of signing, pronunciation, slang, and signs used. Other sociological factors, including age and gender, can affect ASL usage and contribute to its variety, just as with spoken languages.
Fingerspelling is part of ASL and is used to spell out English words. In the fingerspelled alphabet, each letter corresponds to a distinct handshape. Fingerspelling is often used for proper names or to indicate the English word for something.
Potential Benefits Of Sign Language For Toddlers
Possible benefits of using sign language for your little ones include:
- earlier ability to understand spoken words, especially from ages 1 to 2
- earlier use of spoken language skills, especially from 1 to 2 years old
- earlier use of sentence structure in spoken language

From what we know, most of the possible gains found in children seem to level off after age 3. Children 3 years and older who were taught sign language dont appear to have significantly greater abilities than children who didnt sign.
But it may still be valuable to sign with your youngster for several reasons.
Many parents who used sign language reported that their infants and toddlers were able to communicate so much to them during those critical years, including emotions.
As any parent of a toddler knows, its often difficult to know why your child is behaving the way they are. But with sign language, the child has another way of expressing themselves.

There is no one definitive way to say f you in sign language. Some possible ways to sign this phrase might be to use an obscene gesture, such as flipping the middle finger, or to sign the word fuck using ASL slang. Another possibility could be to sign the phrase fuck you using ASL grammar, in which case the sign for fuck would be signed first, followed by the sign for you.

About The Pull Request
This PR contains an intermediate refactor and a bug-fix for sign language, which was originally from the Tongue Tied quirk/tongue. With helpful advice from @MrMelbert and @LemonInTheDark, I have successfully decoupled sign language from the tongue and ported it into a highly modular DCS component, and then added an Action for toggling it. Big thanks to @Wallemations, the original creator of Tongue Tied, for creating the new Action sprite and helping me to complete this project!
The new sign language component is added to all new Carbon mobs, and incrementally overrides several critical functions, variables, and argument lists relevant to a mob’s speech the component primarily listens for the addition/removal of trait TRAIT_SIGN_LANG in order to function.
Additionally, fixed a bug in the original implementation of sign language that caused its say verbs such as “emphatically signs” to stop working. The bug was caused by an unsafe early removal of exclamation points from the input string, causing a conflict with the say_mod proc which requires such punctuation points to be present.

Sign Language That African Americans Use Is Different From That Of Whites
Carolyn McCaskill remembers exactly when she discovered that she couldnt understand white people. It was 1968, she was 15 years old, and she and nine other deaf black students had just enrolled in an integrated school for the deaf in Talledega, Ala.
When the teacher got up to address the class, McCaskill was lost.
I was dumbfounded, McCaskill recalls through an interpreter. I was like, What in the world is going on?
The teachers quicksilver hand movements looked little like the sign language McCaskill had grown up using at home with her two deaf siblings and had practiced at the Alabama School for the Negro Deaf and Blind, just a few miles away. It wasnt a simple matter of people at the new school using unfamiliar vocabularly they made hand movements for everyday words that looked foreign to McCaskill and her fellow black students.
So, McCaskill says, I put my signs aside. She learned entirely new signs for such common nouns as shoe and school. She began to communicate words such as why and dont know with one hand instead of two as she and her black friends had always done. She copied the white students who lowered their hands to make the signs for what for and know closer to their chins than to their foreheads. And she imitated the way white students mouthed words at the same time as they made manual signs for them.
Whenever she went home, McCaskill carefully switched back to her old way of communicating.

What Research Does The Nidcd Support On Asl And Other Sign Languages
The NIDCD supports research on ASL, including its acquisition and characterization. Funded research includes studies to understand sign languages grammar, acquisition, and development, and use of sign language when spoken language access is compromised by trauma or degenerative disease, or when speech is difficult to acquire due to early hearing loss or injury to the nervous system.

Study of sign language can also help scientists understand the neurobiology of language development. In one study, researchers reported that the building of complex phrases, whether signed or spoken, engaged the same brain areas. Better understanding of the neurobiology of language could provide a translational foundation for treating injury to the language system, for employing signs or gestures in therapy for children or adults, and for diagnosing language impairment in individuals who are deaf.
The NIDCD is also funding research on sign languages created among small communities of people with little to no outside influence. In this case, the data from Kaggles Sign Language MNIST dataset was used to train a neural network. The 28×28 image contains 784 pixels each representing a grayscale value ranging from 0 to 1 . Using a CNN model, we used the Convolutional Neural Network to classify static images. To optimize the models performance, we selected the appropriate number of epochs in the architecture after it had been defined.
