Revisiting five legendary speeches from Douglass life in 19th century America, the special invites actors to highlight various moments throughout the history of a movement to which Douglass gave so much. Nicole Beharie, Colman Domingo, Jonathan Majors, Denzel Whitaker, and Jeffrey Wright will take the stage, pulling from those five famous speeches in order to celebrate his legacymore than a century later. The HBO film will also feature a narration of Douglass autobiographies by André Holland, as well as context and perspective from Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Blight and scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr. .

Actors Nicole Beharie , Colman Domingo , Jonathan Majors , Denzel Whitaker and Jeffrey Wright draw from five of Douglass legendary speeches, to represent a different moment in the tumultuous history of 19th century America as well as a different stage of Douglass long and celebrated life.     A discussion and catered reception with executive producer Henry Louis Gates, Jr. will follow the screeningInspired by David Blight’s Pulitzer Prize-winning biography, Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom, this film comprises five speeches written by the noted American orator, writer, social reformer, abolitionist, and statesman. They are performed by the actors Jeffrey Wright, Jonathan Majors, Nicole Beharie, Denzel Whitaker, and Colman Domingo. Actor André Holland reads from Douglasss autobiographies. These, and commentary from scholars, further underscore the parallels with, and injustice still found in, todays racial climate.

    Tickets for this evening are $60. This event is a fundraiser for our filmmaking and media literacy programs in all seven Island public schools.
