Get It Done In A Single Line
“XYZ saves marketers time by eliminating the tedious process of gathering data and compiling reports so you can create beautiful and informational reports in less than 30 seconds.”
Why it works:
It’s concise and to the point. There’s no mistaking what your product does and how it can help. Plus, it acts as an excellent jumping-off point for additional conversation.
Mistakes You May Be Making Now
You might be thinking: It shouldnt be this hard to introduce myself. But yet for most of us, it is. Why? Because you may be experiencing these 5 common pitfalls:
YOU SUFFER FROM PERFORMANCE ANXIETY. Its a lot of pressure to sum up your work in a couple of sentences, especially if youre introducing yourself to someone you want to impress. If you havent practiced a response, your performance anxiety may make you hem and haw and botch your answer.
YOU SAY TOO MUCH. Its hard to pick and choose the best bits to put in your elevator speech, so you pack it all in. That wall of words crushes the listener with so much detail, they cant take anything in.
YOU DONT KNOW YOUR GOAL. Whats the point of the elevator speech youre about to give? What do you want your listener to do after they hear it? What conversation are you trying to start with this person? Thinking about the goal will help you decide what to include and what to leave out.
YOU DONT SAY IT IN EVERYDAY LANGUAGE. A good elevator speech paints a picture which gives your listener a clear understanding of what you do. You dont use acronyms or abbreviations or tired, overused words like impact or strategic. Use analogies, fresh expressions and simplicity to deliver a speech that your listener can understand in one go.
Explain Your Value Proposition
Now that youve piqued your audiences attention, its time to seal the deal by explaining why your solution is better than anyone else’s. An example value proposition is: Asana is the only platform that connects goals with the work needed to achieve them.
The value proposition differs from the solution by focusing on why your audience should use your solution over a competitors. If you dont have that answer just yet, perform a competitive analysis to compare your offerings or look to your executive summary.
If your market is extremely niche and you dont have a clear differentiator or significant competition, look to communication and interface capabilities. Consider why your idea or solution is original enough that someone would want to use it.

When To Use An Elevator Pitch
Some people think that this kind of thing is only useful for salespeople who need to pitch their products and services. But you can use an elevator pitch in other situations too.
For example, you might use one to introduce your organization to potential clients or customers. You could use one in your organization to sell a new idea to your CEO, or to tell people about the change initiative that you’re leading. You could even craft one to tell people what you do for a living.
Pinpoint How You Help Alleviate A Hassle

Once youve done the job of naming what you do, expand your speech to include exactly how you help your customers, or what you provide your clientele.
Marketing Mentor Ilise Benun suggests emphasizing your customers needs and even using their language. What does your client come to you for? What is the deliverable, whether service or product, that they are looking for and what words do they use to ask for it? she says.
Or perhaps your client is coming to you for a specific result. If so, name that result in your elevator speech. If you offer a service, describe exactly how you help alleviate some hassle, frustration or pain, Benun says.
Some examples with clear results include:
Im Ilise Benun and I show creative professionals how being business-minded will lead to better clients with bigger budgets.
Im Stephanie Helline and I help healthcare marketing communications directors complete the high priority projects they don’t have time or bandwidth to tackle.
Im Gigi Rosenberg. As a public speaking coach, I help executives, nonprofit leaders and women on the rise calm their nerves and connect with their audiences when they present online or in-person.

Grab Attention With A Ridiculously Specific Stat
“Your marketing team will spend about 8,730 minutes every year putting together reports. Each. How much money do you think you could save if you took that time-consuming tasks off their list with XYZ, a reporting tool that automatically pulls your data into an easy-to-read dashboard? We’ve helped companies just like yours save thousands of dollars per year and improve operating efficiency.”
Why it works:
This is a bit more salesy than our other elevator pitch examples, but it’s a great option for those times when you’ve gotten to know your prospect a little bit more. You grab their attention with a very specific statistic that drives home the need for your product or service and then share how you’ve helped other companies like theirs to get them thinking.

Statement Of Professional Credentials
It’s typical to provide some details of your professional credentials as part of your speech introduction. Quickly summarizing your educational or experiential history tells the listener that you have the right qualifications for their establishment. When telling them about your credentials, explain how many years of field experience you have and in what branch of nursing. If you’re a recent graduate, focus on explaining your educational background and any practical experience opportunities you’ve had. For example, tell them about the internship or volunteer nursing experience you have.
The Style Foundry: Style Consultant Chagrin Falls Ohio
The pitch
“I’m Megan Moran, and I am the owner and wardrobe stylist at The Style Foundry. We are a full-service wardrobe styling business that helps you take the stress out of getting dressed through our styling services. A typical customer cycle starts with a Closet Cleanse, where I clean out your closet, tell you what to keep and get rid of, take pictures of all of the yeses and then upload them to an app/website where I mix and match them into over 100 different outfits from what you already own. From there, I am able to really see what’s missing and what you need. We can tackle that by personal shopping, which is done in-person at your favorite stores or ones I suggest virtual shopping, which is done online or through our mobile boutique, which we can pull up in your driveway and fill it with our pieces that best fit your style and shopping list. It’s the best of online and boutique shopping.”
Why it works
In pitching her business, Moran faces a couple of challenges: People don’t realize that styling services like hers are availableand they assume that they don’t have the wardrobe or budget to make it work.
That’s why Moran added the detail about creating 100 outfits from an existing wardrobe. Explaining the process behind her services adds further validity for skeptical clients.
They realize Im not trying to make them buy a whole new wardrobe, just weeding out a few things, she said.

Example 1: Entrepreneurs And Business Owners
Pitching to a business owner is much different than pitching to an executive. They can be harder to sell because they are often hesitant about new investments. The most important tip is to use examples as they pertain to the business when explaining a problem and solution.

Business Management Elevator Speech
Hi, my name is Brad. I am currently a sophomore student attending XYZ University in Wallapallooza, Maparaza. In college, I plan on majoring in business, specifically in the area of finance. This summer I did an internship with the Groundhog Hedge Fund Group and I hope to work in my collegeâs credit union when I return to school this fall. Ever since I can remember I have always had an interest in numbers and I feel certain that this is something I want to do in my future career. Next summer Iâm hoping to get another internship learning more about how the international financial market operates. I also want a career working with people since I enjoy assisting others with their finances and I had a blast this year preparing a presentation as a team with a group of other students for my business management introductory course.â
Expression Of Interest In The Listener’s Facility
Be sure to show your interest in the listener and their establishment. If you’re preparing an elevator speech ahead of an interview or networking event, try to learn about the facility at which you’re interviewing or what establishments may have representatives at the networking event. Knowing what the listener is looking for in a candidate can help you write an elevator speech that appeals to their specific needs and interests. For example, if you’re applying for a position at a hospital with many less experienced nurses on their team, you might emphasize how your experience can benefit their team.

Length of Pitch: 30 Second
At Stratosphere Solutions, our OS-level virtualization delivers software in containers, all of which share the system of a lone operating system kernel. These containers are isolated but can communicate with one another through well-defined channels. Ultimately, this lets you use fewer resources than traditional virtual machines.
This elevator pitch is not effective because:
- It’s inaccessible to someone without relevant technical knowledge.
- It features too much jargon.
- It tries to condense an extremely complicated topic into 30 seconds.
- Its value proposition isn’t clear-cut.
Remember, an elevator pitch should only come at someone else’s prompting. If you’re spontaneously reciting it to random people, you’re not doing yourself any favors. But if they ask, you want to be prepared with an interesting, well-crafted pitch.
Template : Be Relatable

When you want to get your audienceâs attention, use a personal narrative that they can identify with. If you want to sell anything, you need to make a personal connection with the customer first.
âItâs a pleasure to meet you at long last. What is the current state of the company? Communication has been a problem for you recently. That was a problem for both my team and myself. After using project management software, our cooperation and communication significantly improved. Thatâs great that youâve found a solution that works for you and your group.â
