How Do I Know If Speech Therapy Is Necessary

If your healthcare provider suspects that you or your child has a speech disorder, theyll recommend some initial screenings. These tests will help determine the underlying cause. For example, if your child has trouble communicating, your healthcare provider will find out if its due to a speech disorder or a hearing problem. If your child passes the hearing test, then your healthcare provider will likely refer them to a speech-language pathologist.

What Is Speech Therapy

Quick Tip: Mirror Talk

Speech therapy is treatment that helps improve your speech and language skills. It helps with early language skills, voice and sound production, comprehension, fluency, clarity and expression.

What does a speech therapist do?

A speech therapist also called a speech-language pathologist assesses, diagnoses and treats speech disorders and communication problems. They treat children with developmental delays, as well as adults with speech impairments caused by injury or illness. Your healthcare provider may refer you to a speech-language pathologist for a variety of reasons.

What Ot Looks Like

In our pediatric population, OT looks like play. Play is the job of children, so our OTs make therapy challenging and goal-directed, yet a lot of fun. Our therapy gyms are equipped with enticing climbing equipment, various swings, and a wide selection of toys, games, arts and crafts. Activities are mindfully chosen to promote skill development to reach a childs goals, with the focus on having fun! Your child will likely think of OT as play time. For example, a child who struggles with tolerating various food textures may spend time in our therapy gym blowing bubbles while on a swing to prep for eating. Climbing through an obstacle course and digging for a treasure in play dough may be used to help a child with delayed fine motor skills.

Evaluations Are Conducted For The Purpose Of Determining The Presence Of Speech Language And/or Social Impairments

ABC Pediatric Therapy

During the comprehensive evaluation, the speech-language pathologist will use a variety of assessment tools to determine strengths and weaknesses in the childs overall communication. The assessment will include a parent interview, review of past records including health, developmental milestones and previous assessments where applicable, formal standardized measures, informal observations, and behavioral observations.

For young children, the formal evaluation is highly play based with some structured tasks. For older children and adolescents, more formal measures are administered. The different assessments that are administered will compare your childs communication skills to same aged peers. Based on the concerns of the parent and/or person making the referral for evaluation, the assessments will look at:

  • Receptive and Expressive Vocabulary

  • Understanding of concepts, directions, and complex sentences

  • Understanding and use of grammar and syntax

  • Ability to interact socially through the use language

  • Articulation of speech sounds

  • Fluency of speech

Following the evaluation, the speech-language pathologist will have the information needed to guide goal development for effective therapy for your child. Results of the evaluation will be shared with the parents in detail and a written report will be provided that summarizes the assessment results and outlines the recommendations discussed with the parents.

What Happens During Speech Therapy

What happens during speech therapy depends on several factors, including your age and type of speech disorder you have. For children, it usually involves play, such as sequencing activities or language-based board games. For adults, its focused on improving or rebuilding particular skill sets.

Your speech-language pathologist will recommend appropriate treatment based on your unique situation. There are many different approaches and categories of speech therapy, and your healthcare provider will find one that works best for you.
