I am a speech pathologist. As it happened, my undergrad degree was in speech and hearing sciences but that was back in the day when one could actually get a job without a mastersor license.
I would strongly suggest you go to the American Speech Language Hearing Association website and look in the information for the public. There is a ton of information about this profession and what it takes to become a speech pathologist.
ETAthe field is very competitiveand some undergrad communications programs dont admit you until your sophomore yearif you meet the GPA bar. In addition, the grad programs are competitive for admission.

Graduate Degree And Licensure
To work in a clinical setting, obtain a master’s degree or doctor of science degree in speech-language pathology. To work primarily in research, a Ph.D. is the better option. In either case, graduates must be licensed by their state before they can practice. Some states require pathologists working with school children to also hold a teacher’s license. The American Speech-Language Hearing Association offers a certificate of clinical competence in speech-language pathology, or CCC-SLP, which is optional but fulfils most states’ requirements for licensing. Some employers also require the CCC-SLP credential.
Program Cost & Admission

An online bachelor’s degree in SLP covers topics in liberal arts and sciences, as well as those related to speech, language, and hearing.
