Other Factors We Consider

Speech Pathology Career Profile

In addition to the above, you should consider some of the following factors:

  • Major Focus – How many resources a school devotes to speech pathology and audiology students as compared to other majors.
  • Major Demand – The number of speech pathology and audiology students who choose to seek a bachelor’s degree at the school.
  • Educational Resources – The amount of money and other resources allocated to students while they are pursuing their degree. These resources include such things as number of students per instructor and education expenditures per student.
  • Accreditation – Whether a school is regionally accredited and/or accredited by a recognized speech pathology and audiology related body.

Our complete ranking methodology documents in more detail how we consider these factors to identify the best schools for speech pathology and audiology students working on their bachelor’s degree.

What Will I Learn In A Speech Pathology Degree Program

The speech pathology and audiology major incorporates core knowledge in biological and physical sciences, statistics, and linguistics with the fundamentals of speech, language and hearing development, anatomy and physiology, and communication disorders to develop foundational knowledge needed to pursue graduate study. The need for more speech-language pathologists and audiologists is high due to increasing cases of developmental and acquired disorders of communication, cognition, feeding and swallowing, and hearing.

Graduate Degree And Licensure

To work in a clinical setting, obtain a master’s degree or doctor of science degree in speech-language pathology. To work primarily in research, a Ph.D. is the better option. In either case, graduates must be licensed by their state before they can practice. Some states require pathologists working with school children to also hold a teacher’s license. The American Speech-Language Hearing Association offers a certificate of clinical competence in speech-language pathology, or CCC-SLP, which is optional but fulfils most states’ requirements for licensing. Some employers also require the CCC-SLP credential.

Program Cost & Admission

We have compiled a list of the best affordable speech pathology graduate programs that you can complete mostly online, and the costs can range from less than $500 per credit to about $900 per credit for the most cost-effective programs. Some programs will be more expensive but may have other perks that could make it worth the extra cost.

Admission to all of the programs is very competitive, with few spots available for training in this highly-desired specialty. Applicants will need to have certain minimum GPA and GRE scores for each program, except for one online speech pathology masters program no GRE required, and some programs will allow international students while many will not.

Most programs participate in the NC-SARA program so that students from almost all states can take their programs, and many also participate in the CSDCAS, which is a centralized application portal for prospective students who want to apply to multiple schools at once. Before you apply, you should check to make sure that you meet the eligibility criteria for the school, and that the school you are interested in will qualify you for licensure in your state. If you really hate taking tests, look at the online SLP no GRE option we have highlighted below. Since the SLP certificate and exam are overseen by a national organization, ASHA, most states will recognize most schools that are accredited by ASHA.

    Identification Of The Issue

Speech issues can be present in people within all age groups. Most speech impairments are identified in children at a young age, most often during the ages of 1.5 to 2. Normal language development is often screened through regular physical appointments, where parents are encouraged to evaluate their childs progress in comparison to normal speech milestones.

When children are not developmentally on track with normal language development, they may be referred to speech services to assist with getting them on track. Some speech and language diagnoses are related to the articulation of sounds and sentences, while others may focus on speech impairments such as lisp, tongue-tie, or dyspraxia.

The amount of words that a child knows, the vocal sounds that a child makes when speaking, and a childs comprehension of spoken language may all be issues that can be addressed through speech therapy. When a referral is made, speech language pathologists can assess a childs current level of functioning and develop a diagnosis to lead an upcoming treatment plan.
