When you first learn the diaphragmatic breathing technique, it may be easier for you to follow the instructions lying down.

  • Lie on your back on a flat surface or in bed, with your knees bent and your head supported. You can use a pillow under your knees to support your legs.
  • Place one hand on your upper chest and the other just below your rib cage. This will allow you to feel your diaphragm move as you breathe.
  • Breathe in slowly through your nose so that your stomach moves out, causing your hand to rise. The hand on your chest should remain as still as possible.
  • Tighten your stomach muscles, so that your stomach moves in, causing your hand to lower as you exhale through pursed lips . The hand on your upper chest should remain as still as possible.
  • Diaphragmatic breathing technique

    As you gain more practice, you can try the diaphragmatic breathing technique while sitting in a chair.

    To perform this exercise while sitting in a chair:

  • Sit comfortably, with your knees bent and your shoulders, head and neck relaxed.
  • Place one hand on your upper chest and the other just below your rib cage. This will allow you to feel your diaphragm move as you breathe.
  • Breathe in slowly through your nose so that your stomach moves out against your hand. The hand on your chest should remain as still as possible.
  • Tighten your stomach muscles, so that your stomach moves back in, as you exhale through pursed lips. The hand on your upper chest must remain as still as possible.

    Deep Breathing

    This exercise might seem simple, but deep breathing is essential for keeping your lungs and diaphragm healthy and strong. This, in turn, helps you maintain your ability to project your voice.

    Deep breathing is a great warm-up to get your ready for other, more advanced exercises.

    To do this exercise, simply start by sitting or standing up straight. Take a deep breath in through your nose. Breathe in until you feel your ribs and abdomen start to expand.

    When youve inhaled as much as you can, exhale slowly through your mouth .

    Take several deep, full breaths before moving on to the next exercise.

    Pitch Glides

    This is a great exercise that will help you maintain your pronunciation and projection abilities.

    Start by taking a deep breath in. Then, push out from your diaphragm while making an ah sound. Try to extend this sound for at least 15 seconds.

    Take another deep breath and push out from your diaphragm while repeating an oh sound for 15 seconds. Do this again with both oo and ee sounds.

    When youve done the exercise with each sound, youre ready to move on and practice changing your pitch. Do this by alternating between the oh and ee sounds for 30 seconds.

    How To Practice Light Articulatory Contact Exercise

    You can learn light contacts at home from the video.

    Your speech therapist will help you practice light articulatory contact on all consonants. You will learn how to implement it on single-syllable words/sounds. Gradually, you will learn to apply the technique on initial, medial, and final positions.

    For example â you will learn how to establish light articulatory contact on the consonant /p/ in pink, poppy, and top.

    Soon, you will graduate to phrase level, sentence level, and conversational level applications of light articulatory contact.

    Once you learn this technique from your therapist, you can always practice it at home alone or with family.

    How To Practice Progressive Relaxation Exercise To Reduce Stuttering

    Find a quiet and comfortable place. Play some relaxing music, and remember to breathe through your nose throughout the exercise.

    Either sit on a chair in a relaxed manner or lie down flatly on your back.

    Keep your arms relaxed, away from your body with the palms facing upwards.

    Keep your legs slightly spread, so your feet are comfortably apart.

    Focus on every muscle from your toe to head. Slow your breathing down. Tense the muscles of your feet for 5 seconds and then relax them.

    Next, do the same for your thigh muscles. Then move to your hip muscles, stomach muscles, chest, biceps, neck, and face.

    Take a 20-second break between the tightening of the next set of muscles. Donât forget to breathe while successively tensing and relaxing the muscles.

    This relaxation exercise for stuttering will help you feel in control of your body and reclaim confidence. In stuttering therapy, progressive relaxation aims to help clients relax the muscles involved in stuttering.

    Respiration Exercises: Breathing Coordination

    One more exercise. This will help you with coordination of breathing during conversational speech. Once you can say 10 numbers in one breath, I want you to count from 30-39 in one breath, and slightly extend the TH sound, like this: thhhhirty, thhhhirty-one.

    And be sure to put your hand on your stomach so you can feel the movement as you exhale.

    You can switch the numbers to 40-49, and slightly extend the F sound. Fffforty, fffforty-one.

    50-59, and slightly extend the F sound. Ffffifty, fffifty-one.

    And then 60-69, and slightly extend the S sound. Ssssixty, ssssixty-one.

    How Does Your Voice Work

    When you make sounds, air moves through your lungs and into your windpipe and voice box. Inside of your larynx are two vocal cords . These flexible muscles vibrate as air passes through them. The vibrations produce the sound waves that are your voice.

    Typically, your vocal cords vibrate together to produce a clear sound. Vocal disorders occur when your vocal cords vibrate out of synch or dont fully open or close.

    Pitch refers to how high or low your voice is. The size and the length of your vocal folds affect pitch.

    Diaphragmaticbreathing, sometimes called abdominal or belly breathing, is a deep breathingtechnique that engages your diaphragm, which is the large, dome-shaped musclethat runs horizontally across your abdomen, under your ribcage.

    Lying Down

    • People automatically breathe from their diaphragm while lying down. If you are unsure of what a true diaphragm breath is, lie with your back against the floor. Place your hands on your stomach and breathe. Congratulations, you are diaphragm breathing!
    • Focus on your breathing. Your midsection should be moving outward and inward while your chest remains fairly still. Spend time feeling this motion. Place your hands in that area for a visual. This is the goal when speaking in the sitting and standing position, and you want to speak with a stronger and more vibrant voice.

    Sitting Position

    • Think of a balloon inflating and deflating. If diaphragm breathing is completely new to you, this might seem tricky. If it feels difficult, go back to lying-down so you can feel what mid-section breathing is like.

    Helpful Tip:Standing Tall

    • Practice breathing in the standing position. Nothing has changed with your breathing patterns, only your position!
    • Place one hand on your chest and the other on your stomach. Breathe in and out through your nose. Your midsection should be moving inward and outward, while your chest and shoulders remain fairly still. Use the prompt of sending your breath to your lower spine.
    • Think of that balloon inflating and deflating. If your upper chest and shoulders are moving up and down, you are not breathing from your diaphragm.

    I Went To The Store And Bought

    Heres a great way to get your pediatric clients talking and expanding upon their descriptive word vocabulary. It also requires them to pay attention, which is always a plus! Start the game by saying, I went to the store and bought milk. The child then continues the grocery list by adding the item you said, along with a new item. For example, they may then say, I went to the store and bought milk and fruit snacks. See how many items you and the child can remember on the list! This is also a great game to play when working with multiple children in a school-based setting. Have them sit in a circle and play the game by moving around the circle and asking each child to add to the list.

    What Is Happening During Diaphragmatic Breathing

    The diaphragm is a muscle that runs underneath your lungs across your body. When your body needs to breathe, it is because there is lower pressure in the lungs than in the outside air, so the nervous system sends a signal for the diaphragm to contract. As the diaphragm lowers, your lungs are pulled down, and become enlarged, and the air rushes in to equalize the pressure. As you breathe in, you will feel your lower abdomen expanding in 3 dimensions, like a balloon, not just movement toward and away from the spine, but also up and down, and to the sides. This is because your lungs are in the centre of the body, and expand in all directions. It may feel like your body is expanding outward from the hip area. Your ribs may also separate outwards and your chest may rise. Just because you are using the diaphragm, it doesnt mean your chest will be still! It just means the air is going lower down into the body as well. Once you feel full of air, you wont need to breathe in any more. There will be a brief moment of stillness that may feel like the apex of a swing, when the pressure in your lungs is higher than the air outside of the body. Then your diaphragm relaxes, and your lungs begin to release the air back out, and your lungs and ribs move back elastically to their original shape.

    Challenge Yourself To Approach And Overcome New Situations

    Make a list of things that scare you right now.

    For example, answering phone calls, placing an order via phone, talking to a new guest, or speaking during a Zoom meeting.

    Next, once you begin to see improvements in your speech after you practice your stuttering exercises, breathing and yoga daily, try to face one challenge at a time.

    At first, you may find it tough to step outside your comfort zone. Joining virtual stuttering support groups and attending moderated video calling sessions with other PWS can help you garner the confidence you need for approaching the new situations.

    Make it a part of your exercise to challenge yourself each day while at home by stepping out of your comfort zone.
