Breadth Requirements

The undergraduate breadth requirements provide Berkeley students with a rich and varied educational experience outside of their major program. As the foundation of a liberal arts education, breadth courses give students a view into the intellectual life of the University while introducing them to a multitude of perspectives and approaches to research and scholarship. Engaging students in new disciplines and with peers from other majors, the breadth experience strengthens interdisciplinary connections and context that prepares Berkeley graduates to understand and solve the complex issues of their day.

Why Study At A Japanese University

Both the current Japanese government and Japanese higher learning institutes are actively trying to increase the number of foreign students by offering scholarships and making the path to admissions much easier.

You will have to meet entry requirements, but in most cases, these requirements relate to attendance at the language school and overall language ability. If you study at a language school and can get your Japanese to a suitable level, its possible to have Japanese universities contacting you with scholarship offers.

In addition, national universities have much lower tuition fees than in other countries. Even private university tuition can be cheaper, especially if you can receive scholarships.

Japan 9 Japan: Culture And Civilization 3 Units

Transfer: UC, CSU IGETC AREA 3B Prerequisite: None.

This course explores Japanese culture and civilization. Employing an interdisciplinary perspective, the course examines the fundamentals of Japanese culture and tradition including Japanese philosophy, religions, art forms, literature, cuisine, and language. The course will be taught in English. No knowledge of Japanese is required.

Japan 4 Intermediate Japanese Ii 5 Units

Transfer: UC, CSU IGETC AREA 3B Prerequisite: Japanese 3*.

Focusing on four communication skills , the course builds up a solid foundation for the intermediate-High Japanese and further develops proficiency to be able to manage relatively complex situations. The course also introduces honorific languages, in addition to colloquial informal register. The socially and culturally appropriate use of the language is exercised in a broader range of social contexts. Reading and writing put an extra emphasis on accuracy and pragmatic components as well as fluency. This course is taught in Japanese except in cases of linguistic difficulty as determined by the instructor.

*The prerequisite for this course is comparable to four years of high school Japanese.

Getting A Student Visa

Once you get accepted into a Japanese university, youll be asked to complete a Certificate of Eligibility form, a copy of your passport and proof of funds . Then the international student center at the Japanese university will submit your COE at the immigration authorities in Japan.

After you receive a COE from the Japanese university, you will need to visit the Japanese embassy in your home country and bring the following documents:

In my University courses, I learned a lot of vocabulary, but when I actually moved to Japan after graduation, a lot of the skills that I used were the language skills taught to me at Clark College. Japanese Associate In Arts Degree

The Japanese program offers a broad spectrum of courses, ranging from language instruction to studies of civilization, culture, literature, and the arts. Language courses focus on all four skillsreading and listening comprehension, writing, and speaking. Non-language courses provide training in critical thinking while exploring cultural and literary themes in a historical context. The purpose of this major is twofold: to develop proficiency in written and spoken communication as well as to foster an understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity. The skills acquired will prepare students to pursue careers in education, journalism, business, linguistics, art, music, and international relations.

Japan 2 Elementary Japanese Ii 5 Units

Transfer: UC, CSU IGETC AREA 3B , Foreign Language Prerequisite: Japanese 1*.

This course is the continuation of Japanese 1. This course stresses more advanced vocabulary and more advanced sentence structures emphasizing short forms and te-forms. Students further develop oral and aural skills and reading comprehension skills by reading texts on various topics. They also hold conversations in both formal and informal styles of speech, and write compositions using short forms. This course also advances students knowledge of Japanese culture and traditions. This course is taught in Japanese except in cases of linguistic difficulty as determined by the professor. Language lab is required.

*The prerequisite for this course is comparable to two years of high school Japanese.

What Are The Course Options At A Japanese Language School

• Full-time courses

A full-time course typically runs from Monday to Friday for half a day . Depending on the school, you can sign-up from 1 week up to a maximum of 2 years. Classes range from Beginner to Advanced level. Depending on your goals check what kind of elective classes schools offer to their full-time students: JLPT, Business, EJU, conversation and so on.

• Part-time courses

This course, using a communicative approach, introduces the student to Japanese sentence structure, basic vocabulary, and the two Japanese phonetic scripts of Hiragana, Katakana, plus a selected number of Kanji. Students learn to ask and answer basic questions and write about simple actions in the present/future and past tenses. They also are introduced to important elements of Japanese culture and customs of the Japanese people. This course is taught in Japanese unless in cases of linguistic difficulty as determined by the professor. Language lab is required.

Applicants Who Already Hold a Graduate Degree

The Graduate Council views academic degrees not as vocational training certificates, but as evidence of broad training in research methods, independent study, and articulation of learning. Therefore, applicants who already have academic graduate degrees should be able to pursue new subject matter at an advanced level without the need to enroll in a related or similar graduate program.

Programs may consider students for an additional academic masters or professional masters degree only if the additional degree is in a distinctly different field.

Applicants admitted to a doctoral program that requires a masters degree to be earned at Berkeley as a prerequisite will be permitted to undertake the second masters degree, despite the overlap in field.
