AHS Careers — Speech Language Pathologist

The Doctor of Speech-Language Pathology degree is primarily for students who want to acquire additional knowledge and skills in a focused area of speech-language pathology in order to assume advanced professional roles-such as master clinician, clinical educator, clinical administrator, or leader in a clinical setting or area of specialization-or to serve as collaborators and supporters of clinical research. The SLPD is unlike the PhD, as the focus is not developing individuals whose primary focus is research. The SLPD program allows students to continue working while pursuing their degree and takes less time to complete than the PhD.

The program is primarily online, with two visits to Boston required over the course of the program.

Students have flexibility in when they choose to enter the program, with either a Summer semester start or a Fall semester start. Each cohort will have approximately eight students.

The SLPD is beneficial to individuals who wish to take on roles as master clinicians, clinical educators, clinical administrators, or who wish to conduct their own independent research. Approximately 10% of university positions in the field during the 2010-2011 academic year were filled by individuals with an SLPD.

Certification Of Clinical Competence In Speech

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association offers the CCC-SLP credential, which is often the initial certification requirement for becoming licensed and registered as a practicing SLP in your state. The requirements for this certification include obtaining your masters degree in speech-language pathology, completing your post-graduate fellowship and submitting the documentation for fulfilling your qualifications. Additionally, ASHA may require you to complete a minimum of 30 continuing education hours every three to five years to renew your CCC-SLP certification.

Why Do Some Kids Need Speech

Kids might need speech-language therapy for many reasons, including:

hearing impairments
cognitive or other developmental delays
weak oral muscles
feeding and swallowing disorders
traumatic brain injury

Therapy should begin as soon as possible. Children who start therapy early tend to have better results than those who begin later.

This doesn’t mean that older kids won’t do well in therapy. Their progress might be slower, though, because they have learned patterns that need to be changed.

What Does A Speech

Speech-language pathologists are responsible for assessing, diagnosing, and treating communication and swallowing disorders for individuals of all ages. SLPs are often referred to as speech therapists.

I decided that when I was a freshman in college that I wanted to be a speech-language pathologist. This was after I attended a seminar about the major, Communication Sciences and Disorders and the different avenues that you could take after receiving that education usually split into SLPs and Audiologists. I was then made aware that I needed to get into school and obtain a graduate degree to officially call myself an SLP.

So, there I was at 22, having earned my undergraduate degree, living in Boston as a grad student while most of my other friends had real-life jobs. Let me tell you how some of my small talk conversations would go during this time

Lee Silverman Voice Treatment Certification

The LSVT certification is available for SLPs specializing in patients with Parkinsons. Typically, LSVT-certified SLPs work with patients to improve vocal expression, articulation, swallowing and neural and muscular functioning. You can also apply the approach and principles of the LSVT program to SLPs who work with patients with speech impairments because of other neurological challenges. The requirements for this certification include completing a graduate degree in speech pathology and obtaining your CCC-SLP certification.
