Three Honored By American Speech
Three faculty members in the Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences were honored at the 2021 American Speech-Language Hearing Association convention for their contributions to the professions of speech-language pathology, audiology and speech and hearing science.
I could not be prouder that ASHA has recognized the important contributions that these faculty have had on our professions. Their accomplishments in teaching, research and service are truly exemplary, said Anne Marie Tharpe, PhD, chair of the Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences and associate director of the
Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center.
Stephen Camarata, PhD, professor of Hearing and Speech Sciences, received the highest honor that ASHA bestows the Honors of the Association for his significant work in the practice of speech-language pathology.
Camarata is an internationally recognized expert in phonology and articulation, language interventions and speech-language difficulties in children with autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome and hearing loss. Much of his work has focused on developmental language disorders.
In addition to his many contributions to speech-language research, Camarata is also a noted teacher, mentor and volunteer. His contributions in the area of developmental child language have altered and accelerated the course of treatment and improved the quality of care for children with communication disorders.

Language Pathology Assistants Credentialing Speech
There are many different types of speech pathology assistants credentialing, but the most common is the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology . This credential is recognized by most employers as the gold standard in the field. To earn the CCC-SLP, individuals must complete a masters degree in speech-language pathology from an accredited institution and pass a national exam.
The position of Speech-Language Pathology Assistant must be obtained through the completion of a certification process. To answer any of the Health History questions on the application, applicants must provide a YES. Each of the conditions treated must be described in a statement made by their doctor/counselor. Failure to disclose criminal histories may result in your application being denied. The board may require applicants with prior criminal convictions to submit the following documents. If you have listed offenses on the application, you must submit a letter in your own words describing the circumstances of the offense. Final disposition records can be obtained by visiting the clerk of the court in the area where an arrest is made.

To submit your continuing education hours to ASHA, you will need to log in to your online account and select the My Activities tab. From there, you will click on the Add New Activity button and enter the required information. Once you have entered all of the necessary information, you will click on the Submit button to complete the process.
It is critical that you complete a certification maintenance compliance form every three years. If you have not already done so, you will need to do so by October 1 of the following year after your certification expires. The forms can be submitted online through My Account no later than October 1st of the year following your certifications expiration date. In order to maintain your certification, you must fill out an annual certification maintenance compliance form. If you do not file a certification maintenance compliance form by October 1 of the year following the year in which your certification expires, your certification may be suspended or revoked. It is mandatory that you complete 10 recorded sessions and one live chat each three years in order to maintain your certification. If you do not meet the requirements by October 1st of the year following the end of the certification year, your certification may be suspended or revoked. The Council for Academic Accreditation in Audiology and SpeechLanguage Pathology is the accreditation unit of the ASHA. Founded over 100 years ago by American universities and secondary schools, CAA established standards for graduate program accreditation that meet entry-level preparation in the speech and hearing field. Accreditation is available for graduate programs with a masters degree in SpeechLanguage Pathology or clinical doctoral program in audiology.
