Combine Many Components Of Language Arts For Lasting Benefits

Finally, the most important benefit of teaching language arts to our teens is so that it sticks with them. Understanding the mechanics of the English languages connects our teens to great minds of the past.

In addition, teaching valuable thinking skills is an important part of communication whether verbal or written.

For language arts to have lasting benefit and to teach thinking skills, combining the components of language arts is a superior way to teach.

When a teen works with a piece of literature, he focuses on grammar, writing, vocabulary, and spelling to name a few.

We want our teens to have a solid foundation for language arts whether he chooses a career track or college track.

What Subjects Fall Under Language Arts

The category of language arts is very broad, but it typically includes these specialties:

While you can sometimes find curriculum that includes all of these or most of these aspects, through my 14 years as a homeschool mom, Ive learned that its better to find resources that specialize. That is, instead of finding an English 3 product for my third grader, its usually better to find a resource that does a superb job in spelling, then a separate one thats excellent in grammar, and so on. It doesnt have to make it more expensive, either.

So in this post, Ill link to all-in-one curriculum and other popular products in the homeschool world, but Ill also let you know what weve used successfully over the years so you have a bit of perspective. I know that what weve used in our homeschool might not be the best fit for your homeschool, so take my advice with a grain of salt as you read on.

Top 3-all in one- homeschool English Curriculum Review

As homeschoolers, reading is the most foundational and important skill that we will teach our children however, we must think beyond simply teaching our students how to read and also understand all the parts that comprise a solid language arts curriculum.

What Does Language Arts Mean?

Language arts is a broad term that refers to all the components of both written and spoken language, used to express thoughts and ideas. In addition to reading and comprehension, a complete language arts curriculum should also include grammar, spelling, handwriting, vocabulary, composition, and public speaking.

Language Arts in the Elementary Grades

In the early years reading, spelling, handwriting, and basic grammar and vocabulary skills should be taught. Reading comprehension can be learned through simple narration exercises such as having your child tell you back a brief summary of what they read or what was read to them.

As children mature developmentally, usually around grade 4, they can begin learning the more complex language skills of composition, sentence diagramming, and more advanced spelling and vocabulary words. In the upper elementary years, students are usually able to begin writing creatively using their original thoughts, but this skill may take through the middle school years and beyond to achieve. The upper elementary years are when students typically transition from learning to read to now reading to learn.

Lightsails 4 Pillars Of Literacy

This online language arts curriculum can be used on any device that has access to Chrome and it stands on the 4 pillars of literacy:

  • Reading: Books, books, and more books! 12,000 books ranging across multiple topics and subjects. Plus, 1,5000 audiobooks! Built-in comprehension assessments help the program determine what your child is absorbing while theyre reading. Every 15 days, LightSail updates your childs Lexile score, allowing every program feature to be tailored precisely to their reading level.
  • Writing: Writing activities complement the reading assignments. There is also a fun chat feature that allows parents and kids to chat with each other within the platform. My daughter LOVED that feature. It was her way of texting me.
  • Vocabulary: LightSail uses a spiral approach to teaching vocabulary with Spelling Bees that build phonetic awareness and vocabulary skills. You can assign your own spelling practice or use the set lists.
  • Fluency: Your child can record themselves reading a portion of a book aloud, then they can play it back and re-record it until they are happy with it. They can also send it to you for assessment. This allows you to listen for inserted, omitted and mispronounced words.

A Charlotte Mason Inspired Language Arts Curriculum

August 13, 2020 by Leahbmartin

Last year, Miss H asked if we could start a Language Arts program. She didn’t know the term language arts, but she told me she wanted to know how to use “capitals and periods and stuff.” She had realized that her peers knew these skills, but she didn’t. I hadn’t added this area in yet because we address it through copywork and phonics practice, even though it is slow-going. But knowing that she felt self-concious about her reading/writing/grammar abilities made me feel awful!

The Charlotte Mason approach doesn’t require grammar, free writing, or general language arts instruction until students are in about fourth grade. I grew up loving these areas. I remember sitting at our old typewriter- yes, typewriter! for hours and writing stories as a seven- year-old. Now my own seven-year-old is showing the same interests, and fourth grade seems so far away to her!

I searched through several programs to find something literature-based and full of meaningful learning opportunities. No busy work, please! This year, we’ll use Learning Language Arts Through Literature, . This literature-based program by Common Sense Press is perfect for our Charlotte Mason homeschool. H and I had the opportunity to try out this curriculum, and I’ve been compensated for this review. I was not required to write a positive review, and all ideas are my own.

The Best Language Learning Software: Rosetta Stone

I strongly recommend Rosetta Stone for language learning. With this software, youll be able to learn a new language more effectively because it is more difficult and professional than other programs. The curriculum is also suitable for children aged 5 and up, as it does not rely on memorization or repetition.

    Character Quality Language Arts

I have used and enjoyed Character Quality Language Arts. This program is daunting at first because of the size of the stack of hole-punched pages, but it teaches many clever ways of remembering grammar rules and spelling words. It is a Christian program that emphasizes character. It draws from the keyword approach to writing that is characteristic of Institute for Excellence in Writing. I am not including IEW in my list as I consider it a stand-alone writing program. CQLA also uses dictation, which I think is important. Some of the work, like defining vocabulary words, becomes repetitive, however.

High School Language Arts Curriculum Ideas

Weve already linked to several great curriculum companies that offer English, literature, and other language arts resources for all grade levels, including high school. So, look into Memoria Press, Compass Classroom, Study.com, SchoolhouseTeachers.com, and BJU Press for your high schoolers.

If youre looking for a traditional grammar book-based course, then check out Analytical Grammar for your middle or high schoolers.

Analytical Grammar: my middle schoolers use this independent curriculum to firm up their grammar skills before high school, when their writing assignments will assume they have a firm grasp on parts of speech and proper writing techniques. I also purchase both the student and teacher texts. These are not reusable.
